As this interview goes live, I’ll be in the heart of one of the biggest qualifiers in the nation—the Northern Lights Qualifier & January Thaw at the Minneapolis Convention Center. is far from finished.
Q: When did you start playing volleyball, and when did you realize you wanted to play in college?
Gabi’s Response: “I started playing volleyball in second grade, and after a few years of club experience, I knew it was the sport I wanted to pursue and play at the collegiate level.”
Q: Can you explain your process in your recruitment? When did you start? How did you start?
Gabi’s Response: “Throughout my 16s year, I was constantly sending emails, and once June 15th arrived, I was on calls with multiple schools. I also attended numerous college camps over the summer to further showcase my skills.”
Q: Can you describe the moment you decided to commit to your college? What made that program stand out?
Gabi’s Response: “What stood out about the University of South Dakota was how much they believed in me and valued me as a player. I knew that by committing there, I would have the support to reach my fullest potential.”
Q: What challenges did you face on your journey, and how did you overcome them?
Gabi’s Response: “One of the hardest parts of finding the right college is dealing with rejection. But I kept reminding myself that it wasn’t rejection—it was redirection. In the end, I trusted God’s plan.”
Q: How have you balanced academics, training, and personal life during your volleyball career so far?
Gabi’s Response: “Finding the right balance is tough because volleyball takes up so much time, but it’s important to make room for other activities. I need to explore things I enjoy beyond volleyball.”
Q: Were there any coaches, teammates, or mentors who significantly influenced your growth as a player?
Gabi’s Response: “Many coaches and teammates have helped me along the way. Coaches have certainly made me a better player, but my teammates are the ones who make the game fun and constantly encourage me.”
Q: What role has mental preparation played in your success?
Gabi’s Response: “I think especially in big games, it’s important to acknowledge that it’s going to be tough. I remind myself that it’s okay not to have a perfect game every time.”
Q: What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from playing volleyball?
Gabi’s Response: “I believe in trusting the people you play with on the court, as they can make a significant difference and provide mental support when needed.”
Q: What advice would you give younger players who aspire to play volleyball in college?
Gabi’s Response: “Work hard every day and don’t compare yourself to everyone else because everything happens differently and at different times for everyone so never compare yourself to others in a negative way.”
I asked Gabi to name two players who have had a significant impact on her volleyball journey. This is never an easy question, as every athlete’s path is shaped by a network of players, coaches, and supporters. But Gabi immediately named
