Mackenzie Dufner and Her Journey to University of North Dakota
In this article:
Another month has passed, and my search for the March Spotlight Player is complete. Don't worry—I found her. And she's not just an exceptional athlete; she's the kind of person you hope every young player can look up to.
I've had the chance to learn more about this player, not just by watching her dominate on the court but by understanding the type of person she is when the game ends. She embodies dedication, humility, and leadership. If my daughter could choose someone to admire, it would undoubtedly be her.
Hard work is her standard, and the results speak for themselves. She doesn't just show up—she puts in the extra hours, embraces the grind, and proves that success isn't given; it's earned. Let's shine a light on this remarkable athlete and everything she represents.
I'm thrilled to introduce our first North Dakota high school player:

, a junior at Minot High School, is nothing short of exceptional. I first discovered her at a tournament in Bismarck, and from that moment, it was clear she was something special. Since then, I've followed her journey closely, and she continues to impress every time she steps on the court.
As a setter, Mackenzie isn't just good—she's one of the best North Dakota has produced. Her precision, court awareness, and leadership set her apart. She controls the tempo of the game with ease, making split-second decisions that put her hitters in the perfect position to score. Mackenzie's ability to read the defense, adjust her strategy, and execute with flawless technique is a testament to her dedication and passion for the game.
Let's take a look at some of Mackenzie's impressive accomplishments:
🏆 MVP of Rival Game—Twice: Stepping up in the biggest moments, Mackenzie has earned MVP honors in her school's biggest rivalry game not once, but twice.
🏅 1st Team All-WDA (Junior Year): Recognized as one of the top players in the Western Dakota Association, Mackenzie's significance on the court is undeniable.
🥈 2nd Team All-State (Junior Year): Earning All-State honors as a junior speaks volumes about her talent and leadership.
And the list doesn't stop there:
- 🔥 Over 1,000 career assists—a testament to her consistency and skill as a setter.
- 🌟 Selected for NCR 17U, competing at an elite club level.
- 🏐 Varsity player since freshman year, proving her talent from day one.
- 🇺🇸 NDTP Selection: Handpicked for the USA Volleyball National Development Program, an honor reserved for the best young athletes.
- 🎯 Led the team in aces as a freshman, showing her versatility and strength from the service line.
- 📊 Team leader in assists both sophomore and junior year, running the offense with precision.
With NDTP appearance coming this summer and her ever-growing list of accolades, Mackenzie continues to solidify her place as one of North Dakota's top-tier athletes.
What truly sets Mackenzie apart is her drive and determination to chase excellence. After wrapping up an outstanding junior year of high school volleyball, she's taking an unconventional but impressive path. Mackenzie will graduate early—completing her high school journey in just three and a half years—and head straight to the University of North Dakota. There, she'll jump right into collegiate volleyball, joining the Fighting Hawks for their spring season.
This rare opportunity speaks volumes about Mackenzie's talent, work ethic, and maturity. Few athletes can balance academics, athletics, and the mental toughness required to make such a bold move. But for Mackenzie, it's just another example of how she continues to rise above the competition. The volleyball world should take notice—her collegiate journey is only just beginning, and she's already playing at the next level! Let's dive into some questions I asked her.
Q: When did you start playing volleyball, and when did you realize you wanted to play in college?
Mackenzie's Response: "I started playing volleyball when I was in third grade, and I never had a moment where I really realized that I wanted to play in college, it was just the next step in pursuing my career."
Q: Can you explain your process in your recruitment? When did you start? How did you start?
Mackenzie's Response: "I started emailing coaches around freshmen year, sending them film, then I started to attend more college camps."
Q: Can you describe the moment you decided to commit to your college? What made that program stand out?
Mackenzie's Response: "The summer of my junior year, I had traveled to around eight colleges and none of them stood out like UND. The first time I went to UND it was my sophomore year. They were hosting a skills camp. This camp was the first step in loving UND. I absolutely loved the first day I was there because they were so engaging from UND players to coaches. The coaches were absolutely wonderful and had a way to make drills feel fun yet intense. The all around experience was amazing, I loved getting to know the coaches, the players, and getting a tour of the facility. I had made a decision with my mom that day, and I wanted to come watch some games of their season. Every time that I went, one of the coaches would approach me and we'd have great conversations, but after the games, Jesse would ask me the same three questions. It felt good that he wanted my input on how the games went, and what I learned from them. Overall, every time I would visit a college, I would always compare them back to UND, either the coaches, the girls, or the campus itself. Over time with all the places I visited, it would just solidify the fact that I want to go to UND."
Q: What challenges did you face on your journey, and how did you overcome them?
Mackenzie's Response: "I have dealt with things like bad teammates and rumors that have spread about me during volleyball. When the situation first started, I had no idea what was going on until one of my friends on the team warned me about it, if she wouldn't of had, the situation probably would've gotten worse. I then reached out to my coach for the team and told him about it, I also then talked to the girls who spread it (some in person while some were a long text). By standing up for myself, I was able to not think about them or their words anymore, moving past it as a whole."
Q: How have you balanced academics, training, and personal life during your volleyball career so far?
Mackenzie's Response: "I find days where I don't have much going on in order to do my homework. I know that if I procrastinate my homework, I will never get it done, so I have to do as much as I can when I have the time to do it. I always workout after school, my workout group is great and I love talking to them when I can. Volleyball is always later in the day, so I try to do as much as I can before practice because it is late in the evening and I know I need rest. I try and keep my personal life to the weekends, so I will put academics and volleyball first before I hang out with friends."
Q: Were there any coaches, teammates, or mentors who significantly influenced your growth as a player?
Mackenzie's Response: "My teammates Zoe Zarr and

were wonderful teammates and I loved being able to travel and room with them for entire summers basically as we played volleyball. We just had an energy together that would be both fun and intense. There was also my club volleyball coach, Nicole Wondrasek who I now look at as family, she has been my coach for 5 years now and she's one of my favorite coaches I've ever had. There was also the coaches in Sports Performance, Troy, Seth, Stephen, Tracy, Ben, Britt, Felix, Zoe, and Zeke. They have all helped and pushed me to be the player I am today."
Q: What role has mental preparation played in your success?
Mackenzie's Response: "Depending on where I'm playing at the moment, to understand who I'm playing with. To not let coaches or players get you down. To keep my attitude and energy at a consistent level, and preparing to talk through every play, no matter what."
Q: What's the most valuable lesson you've learned from playing volleyball?
Mackenzie's Response: "Hard sets are only temporary, everything will get better with time. If you are struggling on the court, focus on something that you are playing for. Either your team, your coach, family or friends, just pick one and play for them."
Q: What advice would you give younger players who aspire to play volleyball in college?
Mackenzie's Response: "Don't let coaches or players make you hate the sport, persevere, it might be horrible now, but it WILL get better. You will find your people, your coach, and community that will support you. It might take longer for others, but it will make you stronger as not only a player but as a person too. Follow your dreams, reach out to as many schools as you can, no matter if you think you are not good enough."

's impact goes beyond the stat sheet. She is a leader, a competitor, and an inspiration to those around her. Whether she's making game-changing plays or encouraging her teammates, her presence on the court is undeniable.
As March's Spotlight Player, Mackenzie exemplifies what it means to be a dedicated athlete—one who pushes herself to new heights while uplifting those around her. Her journey is far from over, and I have no doubt she will continue to make waves in the volleyball world.
Congratulations, Mackenzie! The hard work, passion, and leadership you bring to the game do not go unnoticed. North Dakota volleyball is lucky to have you, and I can't wait to see what's next for you!
