Just a Game (JAG) = Just Some Volleyball Studs You Gotta See

Holiday weekends are typically a time for friends, family, and volleyball. Yes, I said, volleyball. The Wind City Qualifier and Red Rock Rave are a couple of the big tournaments going on this weekend, but also some of the other clubs are hosting their own tournaments. I decided to head over to Just a Game (better known as JAG) and check in on their teams as they were all playing at home this holiday weekend. JAG has great facilities in the Wisconsin Dells and Reedsburg area and along with it, many high level teams and players. Below are just a few of the ones that caught my eye yesterday as I walked around the venues. She seemed to be involved in just about every play in some capacity with her contributions being substantial. She was solid on serve receive and defense and was able to terminate many balls as she swung from the pins and out of the middle. Defosse is one of those players that you can stick anywhere on the court, in any position, and never have to worry as you know she is going to come through and do whatever is needed and asked of her.     Thompson exploded on to my radar this weekend. This fiery lefty lit up the courts with her hard swings cross court and down the line. Thompson was fearless and does not back down from any ball and opponent, making her highly effective on offense and fun to watch. Her success over so many matches stems from the fact that she is super quick and also super smart. She transitions quickly and makes smart shots, reading the court well. Thompson is one that I am definitely going to have to check on again in the near future.     Manley is an effective setter that ran the offense smoothly for her 16u red national team. She was very hard working, tracked down balls all over the court, and got her feet to the ball to deliver clean, consist balls to her attackers. Manley was also highly successful due to the fact that she has excellent court awareness and thus was able to isolate her attackers giving them several one-on-one attack chances. She also threw down several impressive setter dumps, scoring points for her team also.     Sake is a scrappy libero that isn't afraid to sacrifice her body on the court. She was able to track down numerous balls and made some incredible saves in the back court. She has a great, quick first step, excellent read, and moves swiftly. Sake also provided great coverage for hitters and was able to recycle balls giving her team some well timed second chance options.     Asp impressed from the pins. She has a solid vertical that allows her to propel herself up and over the block to deliver lethal shots all over the court. Asp did an excellent job reading and voiding the blocking in front of her. She repeatedly hit the seam or altered her shot to go around the block. Asp also knows how to use her opponents hands to her advantage. She scored several points by banging it off her opponents hands which not only worked well for her but frustrated opponents repeatedly.     Fry is a young, up and coming middle with a ton of potential. Fry was one of the first players that caught my eye due to her footwork and ability to take big swings. At such a young age, I was amazed at her speed, quick arm swing, and the control she possesses. Fry will certainly be one to keep tabs on as she was way too much for most teams to handle in the tournament.     Zimmerman is a fun, lefty setter to watch. She ran a 5-1 on the weekend. She did a solid job running the offense and spreading the ball out to get all of her attackers involved. Zimmerman also played good defense and scored numerous points off of her serve. Zimmerman has that dangerous, lefty float serve that got the best of many teams. Many teams had a really hard time reading it due to the movement and the fact the bottom drops right out of it.     Sukup has a quick, heavy arm swing that packs a punch. When her team was in system, there was not doubt that the ball was going to her and that she would deliver. Sukup also did a solid job reading the opposing teams setter, making quick movements from side to side, and putting up a solid block that stopped many attackers on the day. Overall A+ effort and performance from this feisty middle.     Harder was seen sporting the libero jersey for the 16u red national team and she impressed. This backcourt boss moves quickly and is always hustling out of the court. She was solid on serve receive and her out of system passing was highly efficient as it led to several kills. Harder also has a good float serve that generated several points for her team. All around, Harder is a player that any coach would want on their team.
