Introducing the Avoli Committed Athlete from the DMV's 2025 Freshman Showcase: [player_tooltip player_id='749642' first='Sophia' last='Groshek'] .

Over 30 rising Freshmen made it out to the DMV's 2025 Freshman Showcase this morning, and the talent pool was deep. The 2029 class is considered a very strong volleyball class, and to see why, one only needed to show up at the Michael and Son's Sportsplex in Rockville, MD this morning. Everywhere one looked, there were displays of hustle, effort, and leadership in every drill, and every game. This made it very tough to single out just one player to win the Avoli award, however, by the end of the day, one player had stood out among the rest, a 2029 OH for Maryland Juniors 15 Elite Black and Annapolis Area Christian School's [player_tooltip player_id='749642' first='Sophia' last='Groshek'].

While I'm very familiar with the Maryland clubs, and I know a few of her teammates pretty well, this was my first time seeing Sophia really play. She is one of a talented incoming freshman class at AACS that is poised to make some serious noise in the MIAA Conference this year, as they already have a couple outstanding young players. Sophia plays for Maryland Juniors on their 15 Elite Black team, playing up a year and on a top tier team that has played a few tough qualifiers at Big South, Sunshine, and NEQ already and is currently gearing up for Nationals. With injuries ravaging her team early in the season, Sophia really stepped up to help keep the team in the hunt, and on the road to Nationals this month.

Sophia was a constant highlight reel today at the Showcase, whether it was smashing a ball at OH, playing a tough ball in serve receive, making a tough dig, making an accurate pass to her setter, or even setting an out of system ball better than some setters were, she was everywhere on the court. A true all around six, she played each position well and was never a weak point no matter where she was in rotation. Serving, she had a fantastic hard float serve that the bottom dropped out on for quite a few aces during various drills and game play.

Since the Avoli award is for more than just on court contributions, I had to keep a close eye on her, watching her leadership and interactions with her teammates. She was constantly supporting them, with words of encouragement and high fives, even after tough plays or lost points. She made sure to help keep them focused and locked in during runs, and was constantly looking to uplift them when they needed her. A coaches' kid, her volleyball IQ is higher than most, and it showed as she knew the spots to give some warm words of encouragement, or help fire someone up when their energy was lagging, especially when facing tough matchups.

The Freshman Showcase was a good tune-up for Sophia, who looks primed to make some waves at Nationals and now can focus on just that, where her leadership and competitiveness being beyond her years could be the difference maker for a hungry 15 Elite Black team.
