Class of 2029 Setters Ready for What’s Next

At the PrepDig NorCal Showcase in Ripon, California, the energy was high and the expectations even higher as a talented group of incoming freshmen setters took the court. These athletes weren't just there to deliver clean balls, they came to lead, adapt, and elevate everyone around them. Focused and fearless, they embraced the challenge of running the offense and owning the pace of the game.   From tempo-setting footwork to bold decision-making in transition, this group showed signs of the leadership, technical control, and game IQ that college coaches value. I had the opportunity to connect with several of these setters off the court to learn more about what fuels their game, what they're working to improve, and what they want coaches to know as they begin building their high school careers.   Meet some setters who are just getting started but already thinking a few plays ahead.    [player_tooltip player_id='773953' first='Remi' last='Cruz Wilder'] thrives in the high-stakes intensity of volleyball. She embraces the pressure of every point and finds connection with her teammates in big moments. Her strongest asset is her communication, keeping her team positive and focused through her voice and energy. Remi knows how to reset quickly, using mistakes as fuel to adjust and improve.   She's working on playing more freely, letting go of errors and staying locked in with a next-ball mindset. Off the court, she's creative and driven, balancing her volleyball with music as a county orchestra violinist. Her goals for freshman year include sharpening her setting IQ, growing her athleticism, and staying on Honor Roll, all while building strong team culture and keeping the energy high. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     [player_tooltip player_id='758830' first='Alexis' last='Goodyear'] brings adaptability and vision to the setting position. She thrives in learning moments and values each opportunity to reset and run a stronger offense. Her ability to spread the ball and involve her hitters, especially middles, helps keep opposing defenses off balance.   Alexis is currently focused on improving her blocking to become a more impactful presence at the net. A former soccer player, she brings athletic versatility and a love of competition to the court. She's motivated to lead through communication and energy while building physical strength and stamina through extra work off the court. Her approach to freshman year is all-in, aiming to stand out through voice, presence, and preparation. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     For [player_tooltip player_id='716864' first='Mia' last='Vergara'], volleyball has been more than just a sport, it's been a source of joy, community, and growth. She values accountability, shared goals, and relationships rooted in mutual drive. Mia excels in communication, helping unify her team through encouragement and direction while also stepping up in leadership moments.   A left-handed setter with offensive potential, she's working to refine her front-row dumps and elevate her vertical. Mia's volleyball journey has already included competing above her age group, which has strengthened her mindset and resilience. As she enters high school, her goals include making JV or varsity, continuing to build mental toughness, and forming meaningful new connections both on and off the court. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     [player_tooltip player_id='771588' first='Maddie' last='Murphy'] plays with a love for the game and an appreciation for the experience of team competition. One of her best on-court skills is her strong float serve, which gives her team consistent advantages. She's currently focused on developing consistency in her jump setting, a skill she's eager to master this coming season.   Maddie balances her dedication to volleyball with family time, baking, and personal creativity. Her goals for freshman year are clear: become a consistent jump setter and maintain straight A's. She brings steadiness and drive to every aspect of her development. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     [player_tooltip player_id='747342' first='Reese' last='Booth'] stands out for her ability to process the court in real time. Her quick decision-making and strong reads help her set up efficient scoring opportunities while playing solid defense. She values competition and connection, finding joy in the friendships that grow from team success.   Her focus now is on becoming a stronger vocal leader, bringing more presence to her communication and guiding her team more assertively. Reese also enjoys playing beach volleyball and spending time with her dogs and family. Her goals as a freshman include stepping outside her comfort zone, making new friends, and continuing to develop as a setter and teammate. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     For [player_tooltip player_id='773921' first='Genevie' last='Kwon'], volleyball is about overcoming fear and unlocking joy through determination and connection. As she grows more confident, her natural instincts take over and allow her to play freely. She's a setter and right-side who leads through positivity, always encouraging teammates and maintaining belief in herself and others, regardless of the moment.   Genevie is focused on building confidence in her setting to take more risks and elevate her team's offense. Her favorite memory involves scoring match point in a dramatic tournament final after her team overcame significant setbacks. Off the court, she's entrepreneurial and community-driven, even starting a dog-walking business with a friend. As a freshman, her goals are to improve her skill set, contribute consistently, and push herself to connect with new people and challenges. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     [player_tooltip player_id='772652' first='Brooklyn' last='Sonksen'] values the camaraderie and competitive edge volleyball brings. As a setter and right-side, she leads through steady communication and positive energy. She's working to improve her footwork and timing to ensure cleaner, more consistent sets in all situations.   A fun fact, Brooklyn is ambidextrous. She writes with her left hand but uses her right for sports, adding a unique versatility to her game. Off the court, she enjoys youth group and time with friends.
