In the fast-paced world of volleyball, it's easy to get caught up in the explosive attacks and game-saving digs. But behind every 10-foot line bounce, is the precision of a player who rarely seeks the spotlight: the setter. Often called the "quarterback" of the team, setters are the brains of the operation. They are responsible for reading the defense, directing the offense, and making split-second decisions that can change the outcome of a match. While their role may not always fill the stat sheet, their impact is undeniable.

Let's take a look at some of the top 5A high school setters in the state of Colorado:

Krause has been a staple part of the varsity Cherokee Trail program her entire career, but in her junior and senior year, she has firmly asserted herself as the starting setter for the Cougars. With 239 assists this 2025 season her offense has Cherokee Trail hitting at a .171 hitting percentage, a bit above the national average. Despite being undersized, Krause stands her ground at the net, plays stellar defense, and is a force at the service line. Krause is one of the best all around setters in the state and there's a reason she is a captain of this Cougar team.

Playing at a powerhouse school that has had it's fair share of talented setters, Christensen is proving more than capable of filling the shoes of those who came before her. Running a 6-2 offense with fellow Setter/RS [player_tooltip player_id='738567' first='Logan' last='Cary'], Christensen has racked up 199 assists, 19 aces, and 66 digs playing only three rotations in the back court. Despite being undersized, Christensen is as much of an athlete as any setter. Her foot speed, athleticism, and tenacious mindset allows her to get to darn near every ball with her hands to dish up some butter.

[player_tooltip player_id='759692' first='Kennedy' last='Schmidt'] is only a sophomore, but you wouldn't know it watching her play. Her freshman year with Mountain Vista she dished out 769 assists and with 211 assists so far this season her pace doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Schmidt has the Golden Eagles offense hitting at .212 hitting percentage, one of the highest in the state of Colorado. She also happens to be leading her team in both aces and aces per set, with 21 aces on the season. Despite being 5'10, Schmidt can battle with the best of 'em in the back court with 55 digs. Schmidt is the real deal when you're talking about a total player.

One of the primary goals for a setter is to put their hitters in the most favorable position possible to get kills and earn points. Sarah Reinhart might be one of the best in the business of 5A volleyball at doing just that. Reinhart has racked up a whopping 423 assists so far this season and has led her team to a .265 hitting percentage. Reinhart has also proven deadly from the service line with 21 aces and can hold her own as a defender.

A top 10 setter in the state in assists and just a junior, [player_tooltip player_id='734482' first='Joie' last='Johnson'] is another young talent to keep your eyes on. Johnson has 305 assists on the year so far, and is one of the better defensive setters in the state with 90 digs. At 5'9, she has also proven very capable at the net with 12 kills and 6 block assists. Her game IQ is through the roof and her vision of the court truly impresses. If you're a middle blocker across the net from Johnson, good luck...you're gonna need it.
