The gym in Kulm was packed and loud Tuesday night as two Class B Region 1 powerhouses squared off. Ellendale and Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier (EKM) have built a strong rivalry over the past few seasons, and their October 14th matchup did not disappoint. In a high-energy, physical contest, EKM defended their home court with a 3–1 victory over the Cardinals, taking the match by set scores of 25-19, 25-10, 23-25, 25-21.

From the opening whistle, both teams came out aggressive, testing each other's serve-receive and defensive systems. EKM established an early rhythm behind crisp setting and strong middle play, while Ellendale fought back behind the steady leadership of setter Mya Glynn and the relentless swings of outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='810944' first='Anisten' last='Petersen'].

Despite dropping the first two sets, Ellendale refused to back down. The Cardinals regrouped, cleaned up their passing, and came out firing in the third set—finally breaking through EKM's block with smart shot selection and strong serving runs. But in the end, the Rangers' depth and experience proved too much to handle, as they closed out the match in four, improving their record to 16-7.

Ellendale's Effort: Heart and Hustle

Ellendale's attack was anchored by [player_tooltip player_id='810944' first='Anisten' last='Petersen'], who delivered 11 kills on the night. The senior outside hitter played fearlessly, swinging aggressively from both pins and finding seams in the block to keep her team in the match. Petersen showed poise under pressure, mixing in line shots and deep-corner hits to push EKM's defense out of system. Her ability to stay composed and execute clean swings, even against a big front line, was a highlight of the night.

Running the offense was setter Mya Glynn, who tallied 28 assists while directing traffic with precision. Glynn's court vision stood out—she spread the offense effectively, keeping EKM's blockers guessing by varying tempo and location. She wasn't afraid to go to her middles early, nor to trust Petersen on out-of-system plays. Her hands were clean, her decision-making sharp, and she maintained strong energy even as EKM turned up the pressure.

From the service line, Alivia Knutson and [player_tooltip player_id='801048' first='Aubrey' last='Middlestead'] each added two aces, helping Ellendale shift momentum during their third-set rally. Their controlled serves forced EKM into predictable first-ball contact, allowing Ellendale's defense to read and transition. Knutson's backcourt coverage and Middlestead's passing composure both kept rallies alive when the Cardinals needed them most.

Even in defeat, Ellendale's grit was undeniable. The Cardinals showed flashes of the postseason-caliber team they've become known for—disciplined, aggressive, and constantly improving.

EKM's Execution: Depth, Defense, and Dominance

For EKM, the win was another statement of consistency. The Rangers have quietly built one of the most balanced rosters in the region, and on Monday night, that depth was on full display. Whether it was pin attacks, defensive coverage, or middle connections, EKM executed across all phases of the game.

Outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='831721' first='Elli' last='Lloyd'] set the tone early, using her high contact point and explosive approach to score from both pins. Lloyd's ability to mix pace—cranking line when the block sealed cross, then tooling hands on tight sets—made her nearly impossible to defend. She also contributed heavily in serve-receive, showing strong platform angles and smooth transitions from defense to attack. When EKM needed a steady side-out, Lloyd was their answer.

In the middle, [player_tooltip player_id='884348' first='Betsy' last='Huber'] was a difference-maker. The middle blocker controlled the net with commanding presence, tallying multiple stuffs that completely shut down Ellendale's tempo offense. Her ability to read the setter and close blocks quickly took away the Cardinals' quick attacks through the middle. Offensively, Huber ran crisp quicks and slides, finding the seams with timing and precision. Her footwork and communication were textbook, and she consistently drew blockers, freeing up her pin hitters.

On the back line, defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='791341' first='Alice' last='Gackle'] provided a stabilizing presence. Her court awareness and ability to anticipate kept EKM's defense organized. Gackle made several key digs that extended rallies and swung momentum back in the Rangers' favor. Her serve-receive passing gave the setters room to run the offense, and her hustle on short balls and tips demonstrated elite defensive instincts. When Ellendale tried to shift to finesse plays, Gackle was already there, reading and reacting before the ball even crossed the net.

Together, Lloyd, Huber, and Gackle embodied what makes EKM so dangerous this season—balance. There's no single point of failure in their lineup. Every player understands her role, and the chemistry between front and back row is clear. The Rangers communicate, adjust, and compete with maturity, which is why they continue to dominate in tough matches like this one.

Momentum and Meaning

The match itself told a larger story about where both programs stand as the postseason nears. For EKM, it's about maintaining sharpness and continuing to fine-tune their offensive rhythm heading into regional play. Their ability to control tempo, recover after errors, and execute under pressure speaks to a team built for deep tournament runs.

For Ellendale, this matchup will serve as a valuable learning point. Their resilience in set three, combined with improved ball control and blocking adjustments, showed a team that's capable of contending with anyone when locked in. If they can sustain that intensity throughout an entire match, they'll be a tough out for any opponent down the stretch.

Final Thoughts

In the end, EKM's 3-1 victory was about composure, chemistry, and execution under pressure. With leaders like Lloyd, Huber, and Gackle setting the tone, the Rangers look every bit the part of a team peaking at the right time.

As for Ellendale, their fire, fight, and flashes of brilliance prove they're not far behind. And when these two meet again—perhaps in the postseason—the atmosphere will be just as electric.

Because in Class B Region 1 volleyball, every rally matters.
