As the 2025 MHSAA regular season comes to a close in the coming week, it's good to look back and see which players made a big impact this fall.

Here's a look at the freshman defenders that have stepped up and are compiling the most digs (stats through MaxPreps) this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='812023' first='Brynn' last='Johnson'], Marshall

This freshman phenom has been dominant in all areas of the game. While being a top leader in kills, she's also leading the way in digs with 410 digs this fall. Johnson has been all over the floor, with four matches where she's amassed 20 or more digs.

[player_tooltip player_id='782164' first='Isabelle' last='Brown'], Cadillac

Brown is another do-everything player that we have seen in the Cadillac program. This season, Brown has tallied 364 digs. Recently, she put up a 25-dig performance against Traverse City Central.

Mackenzie Hulswitt, Manchester

Hulswitt has looked very comfortable defensively for Manchester. She has put up 340 digs in the season thus far. Her top outing was a 28-dig performance in a five-set battle with Napoleon.

[player_tooltip player_id='888393' first='Lydia' last='Hartzell'], Cass City

Cass City is looking to make another deep postseason run in D3 and Hartzell has been a big key for them in 2025. She has 308 digs this fall. Her season-high came a few weeks ago when she had 19 digs in a five-set win over Reese.

Aubri Vincent, White Cloud

A solid outside hitter for White Cloud, Vincent is learning quickly this fall and proving she can handle pressure. Vincent has 285 digs on the season. That includes a season-high 20 digs in a four-set match with Kent City two weeks ago.

Ella Brannen, Harper Creek

One of the new faces to step up for a strong Harper Creek program, Brannen has made some great plays in the back row this fall. She has 278 digs on the season, which includes a 22-dig performance early in the season against Mattawan.

Regan Wilson, Fruitport

Wilson has looked steady all season long, but has really taken her game to another level in recent weeks. On the season, Wilson has recorded 276 digs. However, she put up back-to-back 20-dig performances on Tuesday in a pair of matches with Grant and Allendale.

[player_tooltip player_id='587564' first='Lexi' last='Coleman'], South Lyon East

Just like Johnson at Marshall, Coleman has been a phenom for South Lyon East, leading the team in multiple areas. Defensively, Coleman has 270 digs for the Cougars. An 18-dig performance against Milford was her season high.

[player_tooltip player_id='885455' first='Kate' last='Berghoff'], Mercy

The Marlins have never been shy at relying on freshmen to step up and Berghoff is another of those freshmen. She has 249 digs on the season while facing some of the top hitters in the state. Her top outing was a 17-dig effort against rival Marian a couple of weeks ago.

[player_tooltip player_id='888953' first='Kennedy' last='Thomas'], East Lansing

Thomas has been a very impressive freshman in the Lansing area, proving she can take on a lead role right away. The hitter/setter combo has 244 digs this fall. Thomas has had 10 different matches with at least 10 digs.
