High school volleyball in the state of Colorado is highly competitive, as we all know. Part of the continued competitiveness of Colorado programs is due to the environment that each of these programs have at the JV level. These schools boast some of the most competitive and well-resourced athletic programs, and their JV teams are no exception. While varsity squads often grab the headlines, it's on the JV courts that many athletes hone their skills, develop team chemistry, and prepare to step into the spotlight. Let's take a look at some players that are crushing it at the JV level and could be a varsity level threat in the upcoming years.

[player_tooltip player_id='764412' first='Mackenzie' last='Bailey'] might be one of the fiercest competitors in the state of Colorado, which is saying something. One of the two setters for the Grandview Wolves JV squad, Bailey does a great job of getting her hands to every ball and running a smart and well distributed offense. She's incredibly fast on the floor, strong defensively, and has a wicked float serve. One of the captains of this squad, Bailey is the first to fire her team up, hold them (and herself) accountable, and lead the Wolves.

Freshman setter Ema Reyes has stepped into setting for the Grandview JV squad almost seamlessly. At 6'0, she makes her presence felt at the net, often times using either power or finesse to be an offensive outlet for the JV Wolves. Reyes runs a well distributed offense making sure to incorporate all of her hitters. Her strength and ability to push the ball, reversing the flow also opens up a ton of space for her attackers to find ways to score. Defensively, Reyes is disciplined as both an off-blocker and defender, making attackers have to attack hard to score on her.

Typically, incoming freshman tend to be shy with their voices, but that certainly is not the case for freshman libero Lexi Jordan. Incredibly active with her voice and feet, she covers a ton of the court defensively. In the serve and pass game, Jordan has a tough jump float serve and is calm in the lanes. She does a good job of taking court away from opposing servers to serve non-liberos and, despite taking up a lot of court, manages to give her setter a quality pass. Another typically challenging aspect of the game for freshman libs is the ability to set out of system, but Jordan set up her hitters as well as anyone could ask. Lexi Jordan is the real deal and definitely someone to keep your eye on in the coming years.

Freshman outside hitter Tatum Phillips has been balling out in her first season at Regis Jesuit High School. Despite only being listed at 5'5", she has been a scoring machine at the pin for the JV squad. A smaller pin, Phillips utilizes great range and has a plethora of shots at her arsenal, but don't be fooled...she's got a wicked fast arm and plenty of power. She plays 6 rotations for the JV Rangers and is more than capable of holding her own in defense and serve receive. She's also proven to be an effective attacker out of the back row, an important skill for undersized hitters to have.

Gabby Goodwater is the only 6 rotation setter on this list and there's certainly a reason for that. Being able to manage blocking, defense, and serving, while also running the offense can overwhelm many would-be setters but Goodwater takes it all in stride. She runs a fast tempo out to the pins, utilizes her middles out of serve receive and transition, and mixes up her offense to keep the opposing block and defense on their toes. She also knows when to push a harder set to give her attackers favorable one-on-one matchups or when to just set the simple ball and trust her hitters to get the job done. Goodwater is a setter that at many other schools, would be running the varsity offense.

One of our younger setters on this list, sophomore Annika Loven has an incredibly high ceiling to become one of the better setters in the state. At 5'10, Loven is a force in the front row, but don't be fooled, she's not afraid to step in and defend when necessary. Watching Loven play, it's quite evident that she's a hard worker. She sprints to every ball to set up her hitters and is fast in her release from defense to the setter's spot. In the event that she can't get to the ball with her hands, she's shown great ability to set up her hitters using her platform, a great option when out of system. Loven runs a well distributed offense and does a great job of feeding her middles even if the pass isn't perfect. Loven is one to keep an eye on this kid as she continues to grow as an athlete...
