Introducing the Avoli Committed athlete from the Prep Dig DMV Exposure Showcase: [player_tooltip player_id='768375' first='Alexis' last='VerMeer'].

The Richmond, VA stop of the PrepDig Exposure Tour had a major turnout with over 100 girls in attendance. This selection usually stands out and narrows itself down as the number of girls that are vocal, commanding and have that non-stop motor usually really stand out, but this event was a little different than previous. This time, the whole building was so loud because everywhere you turned there were girls leading, cheering, calling out plays, and going 100-mph, which is amazing for volleyball, but much harder to single out one winner for this award. As the day progressed, we narrowed down and chose a standout 2028 OH from Lancaster High School and the host [program_tooltip program_id='498495' first='Richmond' last='Volleyball Club'].

This isn't the first time Alexis has popped up on my radar. Last year at NEQ in Philly, I got to see her up close and personal while watching another team. I didn't know much about this RVC team, but watching in warm ups, I could already tell something was different. Alexis and a couple of her teammates absolutely stole the show, and I made them the focus of one of my first ever write ups ever for PrepDig. With VA being a fairly large state, and being split between two volleyball regions, I don't often get a chance to see teams from the southern range, Richmond, VA Beach, Williamsburg, areas that I know are full of athletic talent, but I just don't get to see unless we are at larger tournaments. This RVC team was a monster hiding in plain sight however, they had at least four big time prospects on it, and Alexis was probably at the front of that pack, hitting hard balls down the line, playing great defense, she was a problem a team has to figure out how to beat.

Fast forward to yesterday, and Alexis' talent was clearly on display again. She showed great ability on both line and cross shots, and flashed the ability to drop a tip when there for the point as well. She covered well in the block, she played balls and made good passes in serve receive, she is the total package as an all-around six. What won her the Avoli title however were the intangibles that often get overlooked when on the court. She was encouraging to her teammates. She did a good job leading, helping people to slide and adjust when she saw the other team target something, she was there to help her teammates off the ground and give them encouragement, and her hustle was there start to finish. It's so demanding to put girls in a room full of strange players and expect them to be supportive and treating their teammates like family, but Alexis was doing that from early in the day until the end. She's the kind of player that girls get excited to play with, and that kind of chemistry so quick will give teams a major advantage in these environments where often girls unsure of each other won't talk and would rather run into each other than have to introduce themselves or communicate.

That kind of leadership that Avoli is looking for is the kind that leads to big success on the court during the season, and I have no doubt that Alexis' RVC 16N team will have that in the upcoming club season. I'm looking forward to seeing them at tournaments this year and seeing how they continue to develop and excel.
