Early-season bids are on the table in Minneapolis.

We've been keeping a close eye on results trickling in from Wave 1 of the Northern Lights Qualifier. This Minneapolis qualifier always generates storylines for the Great Plains Region, and we can usually rely on Nebraska competitors advancing to Championship Sunday. The intrigue is mounting again in 2026.

Here's an overview of which Nebraska representatives are on the cusp of bid triumphs at NLQ. Time for the final push.

[program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 17 Elite's Pool Perfection

Let's open in Open.

[program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 17 Elite has amassed extraordinary momentum dating back to last year's 16s campaign. This group clawed its way to the 16 Open Gold bracket at GJNC last summer, marking the biggest triumph of 16 Elite's 2025 campaign. Closing out with a bang has seemingly carried into the new year.

17 Elite is in the Sunday running for one of NLQ's three 17 Open bids. However, [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last='']'s consistent dominance is perhaps more notable than its Gold Pool appearance. No team in Minneapolis managed to topple 17 Elite in two rounds of competition.

The run started with three consecutive sweeps over Iowa PowerPlex, CPA, and Miami Hype. [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] rolled in Friday's contests, winning all but one set by seven or more points.

A tougher Saturday slate still yielded similar results. 17 Elite took down MKE Sting to start 1-0, but adversity finally arrived in the day's second contest. Kokoro handed [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] its first set loss of the tournament to force a critical mid-morning tiebreaker. VCN responded with a 15-9 victory to log a 2-0 record and secure the inside track to a Gold pool appearance.

Regional bragging rights were on the line in Round 2's finale. [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] met [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Synergy, a familiar showdown on major tournament stages. 17 Elite capped off a 6-0 start with another triumph over 17 Synergy, propelling the Lincoln crew one step closer to Open glory.

A Roundabout Path for [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 18 Elite

VCN strikes again.

While 17 Elite bulldozed through the first two rounds of 17 Open, VCN 18 Elite's journey in 18 USA took on a decidedly different form. No two qualifier treks are the same.

18 Elite's Minneapolis stay began with a three-set defeat to FC Elite 18 Navy. An opening qualifier loss can be a tremendous pressure test for teams and athletes, but 18 Elite's cast of veterans showcased a bit of Friday resilience. Two emphatic sweeps over USANY and Mizuno Northern Lights kept [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] in the hunt.

Friday's unorthodox path was just a primer for Saturday's head-spinning results. 18 Elite's first pair of Round 2 contests were three-set thrillers, but the Great Plains Region challengers fell in both bouts to start 0-2 in pool play. This would normally eliminate a team from Gold contention, but this was not an ordinary pool.

A chaotic wave of results carved a path forward for [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last='']. One win in Saturday's finale could put 18 Elite in a three-way tie between 1-2 teams, making Saturday's prior set victories even more important. The only obstacle in the way was Premier Nebraska 18 Black.

Yes, we had another winner-take-all Great Plains Region bout in Minneapolis. How does this always happen? Just like their 17 Open counterparts, [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 18 Elite survived a three-set gauntlet against their in-state foe to stay alive.

The final piece of the puzzle was a Midwest Elite sweep over PVA, which gave [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] a second-place finish based on set victories. The bid journey continues Sunday morning in the 18 USA semifinals against Austin Juniors.

What a way to reach the podium.

Banzai VBC 18 Select Finds its Groove

This is not the first Minneapolis visit for Banzai VBC 18 Select, but this star-studded group has saved its best for last.

We were impressed with the team's fight and resolve as 17s last year. NLQ is producing more memories a year later in the event's 18 Liberty field. Despite dropping a three-set contest against FEVA to start this weekend's action, Banzai VBC has found its form to establish itself as a divisional frontrunner.

Two sweeps over 1W and PVA secured 18 Select's spot in the second round. This was the prelude to three more straight-set wins over High Desert, WI Juniors, and MKE Sting. Banzai VBC emodied the mantra of "climbing the ladder" in pool play and swiped the No. 1 seed in Sunday's 18 Liberty bracket.

A rematch with 1W awaits.

Nebraska Elite 18 Miami Brings the Heat

Welcome to the party, Nebraska Elite.

Last year's Nebraska Elite 16 Surge team competes at the Northern Lights Qualifier.

We shouldn't be surprised to see 18 Miami vying for NLQ's lone 18 American bid heading into Sunday's slate. This roster has a unique medley of Omaha-area prep stars who have seen the highest levels of Nebraska prep competition. These athletes wouldn't be daunted by the trip up north.

Early dominance put Nebraska Elite on the fast track to Round 2. From there, a 2-1 Saturday performance was good enough for a first-place finish in Round 2 pools--and a first-round bye for bracket play.

It's a crucial advantage that could land 18 Miami a spot in the GJNC field.

Double Trouble in 17 American

We're closing out with a duo.

Banzai VBC 18 Select wasn't the only Great Plains team to earn the top seed in its division's Gold bracket. Nebraska Elite 17 Surge continued its tradition of Minneapolis success with a 6-0 run through the first tournament's first two rounds.

It's nothing new for this group. We have fond memories of 16 Surge making last year's final round at NLQ, and many players from that core group have stuck together for 2026. The result is a cohesive, well-rounded attack that few have matched in the 17 American division.

And, of course, we mentioned in our NLQ preview that Nebraska Juniors 17 Black should have some lofty expectations for Minneapolis. The team has delivered with a 5-1 start and a berth in the 17 American quarterfinals.

A single bid is up for grabs here, so we can't have both squads reach the mountaintop. A meeting in the finale can't be ruled out, however. It would only be fitting.

Early-season bids are on the table in Minneapolis.
