Sophomore Attackers Hitting with Purpose

The players below are skilled at attacking and placing the ball strategically. They work hard every play and read the defense flawlessly helping them score.    Wagner is always watching her opponents. Before making a play she notices the open spots on the court. Using this to her advantage, she strategically places the ball into one of these areas. Wagner is well rounded and can perform many shots. Swinging line and cross, while successfully working around the block puts the ball down. Using the block she will use her power to stop her opponents from having a chance at returning the ball. Never knowing what Wagner is going to do takes away expectations and makes it harder for her opponents to defend the court.     Sweeney has a fast approach, high contact, and fast swing. She runs a fast offense, often swinging before the block has a chance to jump. Watching the block, she easily tools the ball using their hands to hit the ball out and score. During rallies she is fast to transition off the net and stay behind the ball to attack from any angle. Her diversity of shots provides her with success on and off the net.     Baker-Layman contacts the ball high getting it over the block. Her fast swing allows her to hit many areas on the court. Her sharp cross shot and deep line shot are hard for her opponents to return. She is aware of the defense and what is open on the other side of the court. When defending, Baker-Layman put up a big and strong block. Her communication on the court helps her teammates work well together.     Thompson is a strong defensive player. She moves quickly and reads her opponents to anticipate where the ball is going to go. Her passing platform and angle puts the ball on the setters forehead. Her footwork gets her behind the ball and create space to set, pass, or swing. When approaching, Thompson moves quickly, getting to the ball and swinging fast. She controls the ball over the net and often hits open areas to score.     Wilmont has a fast, hard, high, and deep swing. She easily hits the open back corners on her opponents' side getting over the block. She is able to see the block and works around it. Her excitement for the game is shown through her communication and dedication on the court. She works hard to keep the play alive by covering her hitters and working hard to control out of system balls.     Jannson has the skill to place the ball anywhere on the court. Her control makes each kill look easy. Transitioning quickly off of the net to get behind the ball, she approaches fast. Attacking the ball with a high swing, she works around the block that is set up in front of her with minimal error. If the block does succeed in stopping the ball at the net, Jansson is ready to cover herself and allow her team another opportunity to score.
