Standout Setters in the Skyline Classic 5

The club volleyball season continues to progress at full pace in the country, and every weekend, dozens of tournaments of all levels are held in the state of Texas. Prep Dig continues to follow many of them, attending events and tracking down the most exciting young players in the Lone Star State. On Saturday, January 31, we made it to the recently renovated facilities of the [program_tooltip program_id='510661' first='Houston' last='Skyline'] club, which hosted the Skyline Classic #5. The tournament featured 38 teams, split into five divisions, encompassing the 16s, 17s and 18s age groups.

Skyline Classis #5: 16 American Division - Photos

https://www.instagram.com/p/DUMbiFejz9P/?img_index=1

We focused our coverage on the eight-team 16 American Division and will now share the analysis on the players who caught our eye during the morning. We begin with the setters: Whitman set for the [program_tooltip program_id='510661' first='Houston' last='Skyline'] 16 White team that triumphed in the division with three wins and no sets lost. Her distribution was very consistent and reliable, keeping the team's offense in a good rhythm. Whitman did a good job of using her middles as much as she could and showed good variation with her sets, keeping opposing blockers under constant pressure. She made a big impact from the service line, going on long runs on a few occasions, and also came up with impressive digs at the right back position.

Briscoe was the starting setter for the [program_tooltip program_id='510661' first='Houston' last='Skyline'] 16 Silver side that ranked second with two wins and a loss. A playmaker with firm hands, she did a very good job with her distribution, standing out for her ability to deliver accurate shoot sets at the pin. Briscoe demonstrated a solid all-around game and also produced well on the back row, setting and playing defense at a good level. She took hitting duties while at the net on some moments and showed good vision to put the ball down with well-placed shots and tips.

Sloan played for the Crossroads 16U team that ended up in fifth place with two wins and a loss. A tall setter, she moved well on the court and did a good job of tracking passes off the net and remaining accurate with her locations. Sloan was creative with her playmaking, intelligently moving her hitters around, and was precise when setting against the flow of play. The setter also served well, getting opponents out of system and making her team's defensive system work easier.

Leonard was part of the HVA 16 Red team that ended up in eighth place after dropping all three of their matches. A high-energy player, she thrived with her distribution, consistently feeding her middle, who were the players with the most offensive potential in the team. Leonard also contributed in different areas of the game, doing well with her serving and defense and operating as a right side hitter on some occasions. She also had a big leadership role within the team, consistently communicating with her teammates and encouraging them.
