The best stories are normally created by the players as they compete in the tournaments. The 540 Volleyball Club Elite 17 certainly did that by winning the East Coast championship. Not a lot of superstars on their team but they certainly show a lot of grit. Four of their last five sets were decided by two points, three of them going into overtime. Fortunately, they won three of the two point games to win the East Coast Championship.

Virginia Juniors got close in the 16s. They lost in the finals to Synergy Plutonium. Below is a summary of the teams who competed in the gold bracket and their journey to the end. The 14s and 15s will be discussed in the next post. Some of the players who stood out will be profiled in the third post. As was pointed out - lots of stories to write about with all of them generated by the players.

17s East Coast Gold Bracket Participants

[program_tooltip program_id='489547' first='540' last='Volleyball Academy']

[player_tooltip player_id='530368' first='Sadie' last='Barrera']

The teams started the tournament with 6 team bracket play. [program_tooltip program_id='489547' first='540' last='Volleyball Academy'] was the third seed. They got by their first day fairly easily, sweeping all their opponents. The second day turned a little rougher. Their first match against third seeded Synergy Phoenix they won the first set 25-20. They lost the second set 25-18. The third set they were down 8-12, came back to tie the game 12-12, then fell behind again 14-12. A [player_tooltip player_id='448705' first='Danika' last='Swanson'] setter dump and a Synergy hitting error tied the score again 14-14. Synergy found the court on their next two kills to win 16-14.

That left a critical match with Virginia Elite, the number two seed who came into the match undefeated. A loss would make it tougher for 540 to advance to the gold bracket. A win would create a 3-way tie for first leaving the teams at the mercy of the tie breaker.

In the first set [player_tooltip player_id='577515' first='Sierra' last='Beaver'] carried the team with two combo blocks and two kills. The second block she teamed with [player_tooltip player_id='990524' first='Emmaline' last='Coelho'] to give [program_tooltip program_id='489547' first='540' last='Volleyball Academy'] a 24-22 lead. Her middle counterpart [player_tooltip player_id='581553' first='Karinne' last='Goodrum'] powered four kills and one block, the last giving 540 a 21-19 lead. With the score 24-22 back to back net serves gave 540 the 25-23 win. Virginia Elite won the second set 25-16 but 540 bounced back to win the third 15-12.

Club 540 and Virginia Elite both finished 4-1, 9-3. The tie breaker came down to point differential, where Club 540 won out 1.25 to 1.24.

The crossover match came next, where 540 swept past Infinity Green 25-18, 25-22. Infinity Green came into the tournament as the top seed. They had swept through all their opponents in pool play. A big win for 540.

Things did not get any easier on the third day, which opened the gold bracket playoffs. They had to play Deadfrog, the second seed of the tournament. However, Deadfrog like Club 540 finished in a three way tie for first in their pool, but in a tie breaker settled for second place. 540 lost the first set 25-23 then showed their grit by winning the next two 25-20, 15-7.

Their next match against Synergy Uranium will stand out as one for the ages. Perhaps the best match I have watched since Metro lost a second set in the Junior Nationals 42-40. Synergy won the opener 27-25. In the second set Synergy served for match point on at least five occasions but 540 scratched it out to level the set.

A [player_tooltip player_id='530396' first='Jaylyn' last='Barnes'] kill tied the score 26-26. [player_tooltip player_id='448705' first='Danika' last='Swanson'], now setting a 5/1 feasted on a high pass close to the net to smash the second ball to the floor for a 27-27 tie. [player_tooltip player_id='536957' first='Ava' last='Young'] came through with a kill to knot the score again 28-28 and then received a nice out of system set from [player_tooltip player_id='530368' first='Sadie' last='Barrera']. She buried it to give 540 their first overtime lead 29-28. A serving error out tied it again 29-29.

[player_tooltip player_id='577515' first='Sierra' last='Beaver'] buried a middle set to the floor to give 540 another lead at 30-29. [player_tooltip player_id='530368' first='Sadie' last='Barrera'] chose to let a Synergy spike pass her by and it sailed out by a few inches for a 31-29 win. Let the celebration begin. Unfortunately, the match was not yet over.

The third set was just as ight with no team taking more than a two point lead. A tip over the block gave Synergy their first overtime lead 15-14. An [player_tooltip player_id='536957' first='Ava' last='Young'] kill tied the set at 15 but the Synergy setter caught 540 flatfooted with a dump to make it 16-15. A [player_tooltip player_id='577515' first='Sierra' last='Beaver'] redirect tied the set again at 16-16 and after a long rally and some great digs by Sadie, Sierra ended the rally with a kill for a 17-16 lead. [player_tooltip player_id='760183' first='Keely' last='Kwiatkowski'] ended the match with an ace for the 18-16 win. Now the real celebration could begin.

After that win you would think there would be a little let up in the championship match against MVSA Sparks. Nada. They swept MVSA in the finals 25-21, 25-23. By that time I was on my way home to Virginia.

Some big hits from their middles Sierra Beaver and [player_tooltip player_id='581553' first='Karinne' last='Goodrum']. Right side [player_tooltip player_id='483591' first='Willa' last='Voto'] and left side [player_tooltip player_id='537906' first='Jalyn' last='Barnes'] also generated some critical hits. No grittier a player than libero [player_tooltip player_id='530368' first='Sadie' last='Barrera'], who had some missiles fired at her but popped them up to keep rallies alive. She also scrambled to tee up some juicy out of system sets that her outsides could put away. Setters [player_tooltip player_id='448705' first='Danika' last='Swanson'] and [player_tooltip player_id='888906' first='Ella' last='Sloan'] shared the setting duties, with Danika setting a 5/1 when the subs ran out. [player_tooltip player_id='536957' first='Ava' last='Young'] also contributed some big hits from the left side.

540 should provide some entertainment in the National Division in Junior Nationals.

MVSA Blaze

[player_tooltip player_id='491007' first='Ana' last='Djordjevic']

MVSA came into the tournament as the fourth seed. In pool play they swept through their competition, finishing 5-0. They also swept past Synergy Uranium in their crossover match. Synergy also finished first in their pool. Their first loss came in the semi-finals against Fusion Blue in the first set 25-23. MVSA was able to battle back to win the next two 25-22, 15-8. In the finals they battled what should have been a worn out 540 team who needed 76 points to beat Synergy Uranium, a team MVSA had beaten in a crossover earlier in the tournament. However, this East Coast championship belonged to [program_tooltip program_id='489547' first='540' last='Volleyball Academy'], who swept MVSA Sparks 25-21, 25-23.

MVSA Sparks revised their lineup this year by moving 6'3" [player_tooltip player_id='465322' first='Siyena' last='Fitsum'] from middle to right side. [player_tooltip player_id='772008' first='Meera' last='Patel'] remained at middle while [player_tooltip player_id='529444' first='Kathryn' last='Giesecke'], who played for the MVSA second team last year moved to the second middle. Siyena provides a more formidable block from the right side while Meera and Kathryn kept the middle blocking strong. Left side [player_tooltip player_id='438053' first='Lucille' last='Deraleau'] broke out an effective top spin serve with five aces. [player_tooltip player_id='438097' first='Haile' last='Ma'] is their other left side who banged out two kills against Fusion Blue to finish off a 25-22 win.

[player_tooltip player_id='438058' first='Vivian' last='Ngan'] and [player_tooltip player_id='772012' first='Chloe' last='Tanseco'] share the setting duties running a 6/2. Both are strong, consistent setters but their short stature prevents them from playing the front row on a consistent basis. [player_tooltip player_id='491007' first='Ana' last='Djordjevic'] plays a solid libero with her consistent passing. MVSA will be a force in the National Division in Junior Nationals.

[program_tooltip program_id='498081' first='Loudoun' last='Elite'] Quintin

[player_tooltip player_id='778213' first='Ellie' last='Nguyen']

[program_tooltip program_id='498081' first='Loudoun' last='Elite'] Quintin came into the tournament as the second seed in the first pool, making them the 8th seed in the tournament. They did well on the first day sweeping past their first three opponents. On the second day they were swept by both Ballyhoo Black and Infinity Green, which knocked them into third place in their pool. They were able to upset Virginia Elite in the challenge match 25-13, 25-19. This put them in the gold bracket while Virginia Elite was knocked down to the silver bracket.

[program_tooltip program_id='498081' first='Loudoun' last='Elite'] Quintin lost in the first round to Synergy Uranium 27-25, 25-21. Synergy Uranium would then lose to 540 in a marathon three setter in which all sets went into overtime.

Quintin is led by one of the top smaller sized left sides in [player_tooltip player_id='536741' first='Lacey' last='Bogues']. She only lists 5'8' but her approach jump reaches over 10 feet. Unfortunately, they were one of the teams I missed. Watching Lacey terrorize opponents is always a thrill.

[program_tooltip program_id='498081' first='Loudoun' last='Elite'] Quintin will play in the American Division in Junior Nationals. Many college coaches have a tendency to ignore that level but Lacey is fun to watch. They also carry additional talent that could help Division III schools with pin [player_tooltip player_id='937494' first='Delia' last='Brooks Terceros'], setters [player_tooltip player_id='778213' first='Ellie' last='Nguyen'] and [player_tooltip player_id='444617' first='Kamilla' last='Hendrix'] as well as right sides [player_tooltip player_id='941998' first='Olivia' last='Stroupe'] and [player_tooltip player_id='445966' first='Emerson' last='Barbrow'].

Their one committed player is class of 2026 Era Rruka-Stanton (Ithaca) who blew me away the last time I saw her with her quality libero play. She earned a spot in the rankings if not for it disappearing in the archives.

16s East Coast Gold Bracket Participants

Virginia Juniors

[player_tooltip player_id='923344' first='Lailah' last='Rogers']

Virginia Juniors came in as the second seed and finished in second place. During pool play they struggled with inconsistent play, sweeping past all their opponents on the first day, but then losing both their matches on the second day. They lost in three to [program_tooltip program_id='489547' first='540' last='Volleyball Academy'] and then were swept by OVVC Green to finish in third place in their pool. Not what you want t do as a first seed.

Fortunately for them they recovered in their challenge match against the Libero Huskies. It did not come easy as they won it in three, 18-25, 25 -18, 15-6. After that first set loss they finally clicked, carrying them through to the finals after sweeping their first two matches. Their first sweep came against the number one seed MVSA Sparks 25-18, 25-10. The previous day MVSA Sparks had lost to the third seeded Synergy Plutonium.

Juniors then clobbered Force VC 25-22, 25-23, who was the fourth seed in the tournament. Against the third seeded Synergy Plutonium they could not keep the momentum churning, getting swept 25-23, 25-12. That second set loss seems like a collapse.

Perhaps the best player in the tournament was the 6'4" [player_tooltip player_id='728971' first='Mandela' last='Masimini']. She had just returned from an NTPD gathering, her second. On her first NTPD appearance she was injured and could not participate. This second invite she was able to join in the work outs.

In their first set against MVSA Sparks in the gold bracket Mandela put together four kills, one ace and one assist. Mandela cut in front of libero [player_tooltip player_id='944218' first='Annie' last='Larrivee'] to grab an assist. She clicked well with setters [player_tooltip player_id='562335' first='Zeynep' last='Anaz'] and [player_tooltip player_id='536724' first='Ariel' last='Callwood'] running the quick sets in the middle. Zeynep was an outside hitter just a couple years ago and just started setting. She jump sets well, especially when using the middle with the quick tempo sets. At 5'9" her height is geared more for a setter. I have been told she will be transferring from Marshal to Madison next year.

[player_tooltip player_id='530280' first='Lora' last='Totcheva'] is a 6'0" right side who loves to power balls down the line. The class of 2027 has recently committed to Old Dominion. [player_tooltip player_id='523664' first='Reese' last='Roberts'] is also a class of 2027 who can also bury balls from the right side. This despite her 5'9" height. She has excellent timing for the quick tempo sets which makes her difficult to block. [player_tooltip player_id='923344' first='Lailah' last='Rogers'] is a 6'0 middle who plays for Holy Cross. Somehow Lailah escaped my rankings, although she only played in half the matches. The class of 2027 is a strong presence in the middle, which should increase her playing time.

[player_tooltip player_id='471485' first='Kaelyn' last='Wharton'] and [player_tooltip player_id='829291' first='Allie' last='Bowen'] power up on the left side. At 5'8" Kaelyn is a bit undersized for a left side but that does not prevent her from making an impact on offense. She also belongs to the class of 2027. Allie just slid into our rankings for class of 2028 based on her impact with Briar Woods but now she is making a contribution leading Virginia Juniors. [player_tooltip player_id='944218' first='Annie' last='Larrivee'] is a solid libero that just debuted in our last rankings.

Virginia Juniors 16 did not qualify for Junior Nationals but could play in AAUs. They seem to be peeking at the right time.

[program_tooltip program_id='489547' first='540' last='Volleyball Academy']

[player_tooltip player_id='609590' first='Leah' last='Eggleton']

It was a good tournament for 540. All their teams made gold with two first place finishes and a second place finish. The 16 team ended with a fifth place finish. They came into the tournament with perhaps the lowest seed of the four 540s. After going 2-1 on the first day, with their only loss going against the number two seed in their pool OVVC, they won their next two the next day. This included a three set win against the number one seed Virginia Juniors.

In the challenge match they beat Yorktown 25-23, 26-24 to advance them to the gold bracket. Unfortunately, their first match in the gold bracket came against Synergy Plutonium, who swept them 25-23, 25-18. Synergy Plutonium would go on to win the tournament.

The 6'2" [player_tooltip player_id='937250' first='Joy' last='Fawole'] brings loads of potential to the middle. Left side [player_tooltip player_id='609590' first='Leah' last='Eggleton'] showed the seeds of a solid six rotation player stringing together a number of aces, back row attacks to go along with solid passing. [player_tooltip player_id='990529' first='Cass' last='Shockey'] took some hard swings at balls from both the right side and left side. She swatted two kills in Club 540s upset of Virginia Jrs, one from the left side and another from the right side. [player_tooltip player_id='587035' first='Maggie' last='Race'] set well. She also accumulated a number of aces serving against Virginia Juniors. Would like to see her incorporate more jump sets into her game. Even though she sets back row in a 6/2 jump setting can still draw the defensive blocker up while it can also benefit the hitter with their timing.

540 will play in the American Division in the Junior Nationals.

MVSA Sparks

They entered the tournament as the number one seed so a fifth place finish is a bit of a disappointment. They started out the tournament winning all five of their pool matches, two of them extending to three sets. Trouble started when they lost their challenge match 25-12, 25-21 to the number three seed Synergy Plutonium. The next day they lost their first match in the gold bracket against Virginia Juniors 25-18, 25-10.

I did not see them play until their last match against Virginia Juniors. Impressed with the enthusiasm of [player_tooltip player_id='990534' first='Elizabeth' last='Jedrilinic']. She plays for Holy Cross. Like [player_tooltip player_id='923344' first='Lailah' last='Rogers'] with Virginia Juniors Elizabeth played in only half the games. She still finished third on the team in blocks. Lailah put together more kills.

MVSA Sparks will play in the Freedom Division in Junior Nationals.

Select Teams Worth a Shout Out

South River Volleyball Club

South River won the 16 select, losing only three sets, while winning all 10 matches. They came into the tournament as the second seed. On the first day they won their pool, taking down CJVA Diamond in three 23-25, 28-26, 15-12. The second day of pool play they again swept their first two matches but took three sets to win the third. That last match was against MVSA Starz 19-25, 27-25, 15-9.

Going into the playoffs they won all four matches. The second match went three against Sky Elite Black when again they lost their first set 17-25, 25-12, 15-5. In the finals they beat Monsters Elite Navy 25-14, 25-23. I did not get to see any of their matches.

St. James Navy

[player_tooltip player_id='760223' first='Miah' last='Henderson']

I received a request from a coach who thought there were three players worth reviewing for the rankings. After stopping by to watch St. James play I actually came away impressed with six players. There is no guarantee they will find themselves ranked, but two of them already appear in our rankings.

Libero [player_tooltip player_id='965034' first='Lily' last='Davison'] passed well and impressed me with her ability to serve both short and deep. Defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='760223' first='Miah' last='Henderson'] is already ranked at 142. She impressed me with her play at Annandale but at this tournament she played some solid defense while also showing off a good arm with a back row attack. [player_tooltip player_id='888546' first='Scarlett' last='Sikorski'] is another player already ranked at 133 with her play at Fairfax. She has some height for the middle at 5'10" allowing her to get her hands over the net for blocking. [player_tooltip player_id='990535' first='Sariyah' last='Sadler'] is a smaller setter but ran a 5/1 in the set I watched. She went on a good serving run. [player_tooltip player_id='744665' first='Emerson' last='Salerno'] is a left side with a strong right arm while [player_tooltip player_id='990537' first='Peiton' last='Harris'] is a lefthanded right side who takes a good swing at the ball.

St. James earned a spot in the gold bracket but lost in the first round to Sky Elite Black.
