Having a strong backcourt anchor can be a major asset, but having more than one lockdown defender is a game-changer.

The Heart of America Region has become a regular sparring ground for collegiate volleyball recruiters. Coaches are well acquainted with the deeply rooted talent pool across Kansas and Missouri, so we're eager to do our part in highlighting as many names as possible. It's about to get serious for the Class of 2028.

We recently introduced a "duo" theme while covering the region's top 2028 prospects. Our discussion of elite setter-hitter combinations has inspired us to take this motif a step further, and we're turning toward the backcourt for this one.

How many all-American defenders have Kansas and Missouri produced? We've lost count. It's only fitting that our 2028 standouts from this position group would roll out in pairs.

[player_tooltip player_id='507591' first='Addison' last='Brazzle'] and Bralynn Brown - Invasion 16-Black

We've recently documented Invasion 16-Black's qualifier success, highlighted by a 16 Liberty championship at the Sunshine Classic. Lockdown defense has had a lot to do with it.

Brazzle was already on our radar after her appearance at last December's Prep Dig Exposure Tour event in Kansas City. This Pleasant Hill standout meshed well with whoever joined her in the backcourt, so you can imagine this adaptability translates well to the club stage.

This is where Brown enters the picture as a dynamic, quick-footed defender who is ready-made for the libero role. She works in tandem with Brazzle to form a reliable passing unit that brings the best from Invasion's attackers. It's all you can ask from your serve-receive unit.

Charley Bachofer and [player_tooltip player_id='549643' first='Hayden' last='Bauer'] - MAVS KC 16 National

The MAVS gym is always stacked with must-see defenders.

MAVS KC 16 National has exhibited consistent improvement throughout 2026. That upward trend is often catalyzed by quality backcourt play, and that's how Bachofer and Bauer have become key cogs in the operation.

This duo can occupy any zone or rotational role in the 16 National lineup. Bachofer is a constant spark plug for this group, as her agility and effort set a high bar for her fellow passers. Meanwhile, Bauer presents multi-position influence as a middle-back standout who can also hit across the front row. Versatility is on the rise, and so is MAVS KC.

Bromlee Cook and Alaina Ortiz - Dynasty 16 Blue

Let's stay on that versatility trend.

Dynasty 16 Blue is another Heart of America Region squad that has gradually raised its standards this spring. This stacked lineup clinched a 16 USA berth via the Sunshine Classic, allowing 16 Blue to challenge itself in the 16 Open fray. Cook and Ortiz were ready for that challenge.

Cook is the ultimate do-everything ball control specialist for 16 Blue. We hesitated to label her as a defensive specialist, as she has proven to be an exceptional setter in the Dynasty gym. But Cook also morphs into a backcourt gem who can anchor any area along the end line. 16 Blue has used her in both capacities during the Open grind.

We've watched Ortiz lock in no matter which lineup 16 Blue has deployed. She thrives in the contrasting jersey, producing quality first touches for her setters. However, 16 Blue can also lean on Ortiz to become the secondary setter in out-of-system situations. It's an underrated skill that Ortiz has mastered with her upstart crew.

Sienna Fisher and Madeline Manza - KC Power 16-2

We're due for another visit with one of KC Power's winningest units.

KC Power 16-2 has organized quite a barnstorming tour through its USAV travels. Top-five finishes at MEQ and Windy City were just the start, as 16-2 hoisted the championship trophy in home territory at Show Me. This is a GJNC title frontrunner to keep on your radar.

Having Fisher and Manza in the backcourt helps that cause. These two have exchanged the libero jersey during the spring campaign, bringing their all-around command into the spotlight. Manza's crisp bump setting might be her best asset, and Fisher's immediate impact off the bench cannot be contained.

It's exactly what we'd expect from a KC Power libero corps.

Having a strong backcourt anchor can be a major asset, but having more than one lockdown defender is a game-changer.
