Tips and Trends: The Art of Being Coachable

Tips and Trends: The Art of Being Coachable

Every coach loves a hard worker.

Every coach appreciates talent.

However, one trait can separate athletes almost immediately: coachability.

Being coachable isn't just about listening when a coach is talking. Instead, it's about being open to learning, willing to adjust, and eager to improve. In fact, coachability may be one of the biggest advantages a player can have throughout their volleyball journey.

Why?

Because coachable athletes never stop growing.

Feedback Is a Gift

Let's be honest.

Receiving feedback isn't always easy.

Sometimes a coach points out something you've been doing for years. Other times, they ask you to change a skill that already feels comfortable. As a result, the first reaction can be to explain, defend, or justify.

However, the most coachable athletes do something different.

They listen first.

Then, they try it.

Great coaches aren't giving feedback to criticize players. Rather, they are looking for ways to help athletes improve. Even a small adjustment can unlock a new level of consistency, confidence, or success.

Therefore, when a coach takes the time to help, view it as an opportunity rather than a correction.

The Best Players Stay Curious

One of the biggest misconceptions in sports is that talented players have everything figured out.

The reality is often the opposite.

The best athletes continue asking questions. They seek out information and look for ways to improve. Additionally, they understand that there is always something new to learn.

That's what makes coachability so powerful.

A coachable player doesn't believe they have reached their ceiling. Instead, they recognize that growth is always available.

Because of that mindset, they continue getting better year after year.

Coaches Notice More Than Skills

Of course, coaches evaluate volleyball ability.

However, they also notice how athletes respond to instruction.

Do they make eye contact?

Do they apply feedback?

Do they stay positive when things don't go perfectly?

Those moments matter.

In fact, many coaches would rather work with a player who is eager to learn than one who believes they already know everything. Skills can improve. Attitude and effort are often much harder to teach.

As a result, coachability becomes an immediate bonus.

Progress Over Perfection

Nobody gets everything right the first time.

That's part of learning.

The most coachable athletes understand that mistakes are part of the process. Instead of getting frustrated, they use those moments as information. Then, they make adjustments and move forward.

Furthermore, they don't spend time comparing themselves to others. Their focus stays on improving their own game.

That mindset allows growth to happen much faster.

Looking Ahead

Volleyball is a game of constant learning.

New skills develop. New challenges appear. New opportunities emerge.

The athletes who embrace that process often go the farthest.

Being coachable won't show up on a stat sheet. However, it can influence every part of a player's development. It helps athletes improve faster, build stronger relationships with coaches, and create opportunities for long-term success.

Talent is important.

Hard work matters.

But a player who stays open, curious, and willing to learn will always be a valuable asset to any team.

That's why coachability remains one of the most important skills an athlete can have.

Every coach loves a hard worker.
