Middle hitters often get placed in a box early.

They're told to block. They're told to hit quicks. Then, they spend most of their training focused on those two skills alone. While blocking and attacking will always be a major part of the position, the game is asking for more than that.

The best middles don't limit themselves.

Instead, they look for ways to expand their game and become more complete athletes. As volleyball continues to evolve, versatility becomes more valuable. Not every rally stays in system, and not every play unfolds perfectly. Because of that, players who can adapt often create more opportunities for their teams.

A middle may not spend six rotations in the back row, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't understand passing, defense, or even setting. In fact, learning those skills often improves their overall volleyball IQ. As a result, they begin to read the game faster and make better decisions in transition.

Why It Matters

Every team faces broken plays.

Sometimes the setter takes the first contact. Sometimes a hitter has to send over a free ball. Other times, a middle finds themselves making the second touch. When those moments happen, players who understand every phase of the game can keep the rally alive.

Additionally, learning multiple skills creates confidence. Athletes who trust themselves in different situations often play with more freedom and composure.

Players Who Show This Mindset

[player_tooltip player_id='750205' first='Madlen' last='Gloessner'] continues to impact the game in more ways than just blocking and attacking. While her presence at the net stands out, she also reads the game well and stays engaged throughout rallies. Her ability to react quickly and remain involved in different phases allows her to influence points from start to finish.

[player_tooltip player_id='821757' first='Aivah' last='King'] brings a high volleyball IQ and understands how to manage the game around her. She stays available in transition and consistently makes smart decisions when opportunities arise. Rather than forcing plays, she reads the court and adjusts, showing the type of awareness that helps athletes grow beyond a single role.

Looking Ahead

The middle position isn't changing—it is expanding.

Blocking and attacking will always matter. However, the most impactful middles continue developing the rest of their game as well. They stay curious, learn new skills, and embrace opportunities outside of their comfort zone.

Because at the end of the day, the best middles don't put themselves in a box.

They become volleyball players first.

Follow me on Instagram, @prepdigcolorado!
