If I see an entry list full of unfamiliar names, I have an equally vast opportunity to make discoveries and gather first impressions. That's part of what makes events like Sunday's Missouri/Kansas Stock Up Showcase so valuable.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>However, that's not the full story. I've been fortunate enough to branch out from Nebraska coverage and join the Kansas crew. I used this year's club season to familiarize myself with the state's talent pool, and there's plenty to see in the Heart of America Region. But beyond the tangible attributes that make Kansas athletes so fun to watch, there's a certain competitive spirit that has drawn me in. These Midwest prep athletes have a drive to win and succeed, but their tremendous character, work ethic, and leadership have also set them apart.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It's exactly the kind of attitude we love to see at our showcases. Sunday's Kansas City outing had plenty of displays of high character, making it difficult to pare down our award candidates to one name. This late-summer stretch often allows athletes to log a ton of miles while visiting college camps and other organized events. Sometimes, the stars align for players outside the local radius to appear on the Prep Dig Circuit.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>That brings us to Wickersham, who carried the banner for Arkansas in a gym full of Kansas and Missouri athletes. Maybe I was naturally drawn to "outsiders" like Wickersham after I made the three-hour jaunt from Lincoln to Kansas City. However, Wickersham's persistent positivity and on-court excellence made her fit right in with an unfamiliar crowd.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>These traits have translated to the early stages of her prep career, too. Her Ozark Juniors 15 Premier crew loomed large in the Delta Region, sparring in the 15 Open division at Show Me and the Salt Lake City Showdown. Wickersham also flexed her defensive prowess en route to a top-ten finish in MEQ's 15 USA division.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>She would then get the chance to shine at USAV Nationals after clinching a 15 American division through the Delta ranks. Indianapolis would put another top-ten finish on Ozark Juniors' ledger, propelling Wickersham into the spotlight among Arkansas' top 2029s.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Last weekend's event proved that Wickersham could thrive outside the friendly confines of the Ozark Juniors gym. She took Kansas City by storm with her sprawling saves and steady, technical platform. Wickersham takes great care to follow through her first contacts and deliver perfect backspin to the setter.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>But this award goes beyond the tangibles. Players in Wickersham's position would have been excused for being timid and passive. But this Arkansas visitor eagerly formed connections with the Kansas City crew and brought an uplifting presence on her side of the net. That came through a smile, a positive comment, or a celebration of others' success. It's the true spirit of these Prep Dig Showcase events.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It's why I'll drive great lengths to cover them, and we're glad Wickersham made the trek, too.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
