We just finished up our preseason position poll regarding those awesome setters. Voters had the opportunity to either vote for someone who is on the list already or input their own vote. When the dust settled there were five players with the most votes. We asked each one of them a few questions so that we may get to know them a little bit better. We asked these three questions. Why is setting such an important skill? What is 1 goal of yours this season? and 1 shoutout to a coach or teammate.

[player_tooltip player_id='904300' first='Layne' last='Eutsler']- 2027 Setter for Noble.

1. Setting is an important skill to me because it's the calm, deliberate contact on the ball that allows a teammate to score a point. However, while that's an important skill for everyone, being a setter with a setter mindset is a different conversation. Most people say, “the setter is the brain of the team,” and I agree whole heartedly. The setter must be the one to “self-regulate” their teammates as well as plan for the next point. Figuring out holes in the other team's defense and choosing who's going to attack the ball accordingly, based off the pass. It's a skill that needs to be honed more than just your hands or ball control, and figuring out the best course of action are all things I strive to keep working towards. There's only up from when and where you decide to start.

2. One of my goals for this season is to leave the best and biggest impact I can on my teammates in this program, on and off the court. I believe that the best kind of leadership is the kind that is unselfish and generous, so I wish to be that kind of friend to my teammates no matter if we're winning or losing. Kindness is infectious and that, mixed with court IQ is a recipe for success in my book, and as long as I can get one person to love the sport a little more, that'd make me very happy.
3. A shoutout I'd like to give is to all of my coaches I've had in all my years of playing:
Rebecca Meyers, Brad Casper, Hannah Hixon, John Stoaks, Sammy Duncan, Hai Lee, Nichole Powell, and Mike Freeman, because each one has lead me to be the kind of person I am today. But specifically, Mike Freeman. He was the one who fed into my passion for the sport, as well as the one who helped me grow as a person. I remember one day, when all I felt was down and upset because I had a rough day, then a rough practice, he was the first one to come to me and pat me on the back with a smile, then he said, “it's just a game.” Which I know doesn't sound like much right now, but sometimes it's something so subtle that needs to be said that'll get you out of a funk and he did just that for sure. He helped calm my mind, which then translated to my play. I'm truly so grateful for what he's done for me, how he's helped get me to where I am today, and how he's helped my passion and joy for this sport only grow under his coaching. Thank you Coach Mike!

[player_tooltip player_id='913439' first='Reagan' last='Pitts']- 2029 Setter for Bishop Kelley.

Setting is an important skill because it controls the flow and energy of the game.

One goal of mine for this season is to run a faster tempo and advance in controlling the flow of the game.

I would like to shout out my former coach Ben Farmer for helping me not only advance as a setter but as a teammate this year.

[player_tooltip player_id='750474' first='Mackenzie' last='Manning']- 2027 Setter for Piedmont.

I think setting is one of the most important skills because the setter is the quarterback of the team. Every play is only able to be run through the setter, and it's our job to make smart decisions, stay consistent, and put our hitters in the best position to succeed. A great setter can bring out the best in everyone on the court.

One of my biggest goals this season is to continue growing as a leader while helping my team compete at the highest level! I also want to prepare for my freshman season at SNU!

A coach I want to shout out is Faith Goodner. she is my biggest supporter and always pushes me beyond even what I think I can accomplish! I also want to shout out my teammate [player_tooltip player_id='477448' first='Sophie' last='Payne'] for always keeping me accountable and believing in me more than I do!

[player_tooltip player_id='554318' first='Jentri' last='Denwalt']- 2029 Setter for Mount St. Mary.

Thank you so much!!

Setting is a very important skill because you touch the ball every rally and it sets the hitters up in a good place to aggressively hit the ball.

The goal for this school ball season is to rebound and make it a fun run to the state finals.

I want to shout out to Coach Jeff Boyland for giving me all of my fundamentals and helping me become the player I am today. I also want to shoutout to Coach Santiago Restrepo for helping me with my confidence and being a great coach this past season for me!

[player_tooltip player_id='740047' first='Bethany' last='WhiteEagle']- 2028 Setter for Lawton Mac.

Our job as a setter is to control the offense and make our hitters look good. as a setter this skill is important because a setter/player needs to have the variations of skills and with setting it can help with ball control when in an emergency and can also be so helpful to when a setter gets the first ball that way there can be more help and have the offensive improve on consistency and discipline. I want to make sure I give my hitters the best possible options to score on an attack when communicating and making the best plays to lead my team to a win!

My goal is to improve my leadership skills on the court and off the court to my teammates. I want to have a successful school and club season. I am junior and would like to get recruited to play in college.

Shout out to Coach Madeline because she has always believed in me this past club season and believed in my potential and sees me grow. Congratulations to her on being a new mom!
