Illinois Freshman Showcase: Top-Performing Setters and Liberos

The 2026 Illinois Freshman Showcase held in Crystal Lake, Illinois, was a blast! The event was designed for girls' volleyball players in the Class of 2030 (incoming high school freshmen). This showcase provides athletes with the opportunity to display their skills through drills and competitive scrimmages while gaining exposure. This entire group was incredibly talented and showcased a strong foundation of volleyball skills. Here are the top setters and liberos who were named the Top Performers from this showcase.   Top Performing Illinois Showcase Setters:      Not only was Opperman named a Top Performer, she was also our Avoli winner. What made her stand out from the rest was her contagious smile, positive energy, and encouraging high fives to others. Aside from her phenomenal hustle, quick transition footwork, and her flawless dives, her on court communication, truly led her team when she was on or off the court.   Following a long rally, Opperman immediately encouraged her teammates, called the next play, and confidently took charge of the offense. On the next point, she delivered a consistent, well-placed set that lead to clean kill. Her communication and leadership suggest she has the qualities to lead her teams to some top finishes.     Day not only stood out because of her height but the way that she perfectly contacts the ball while setting. Her back sets really amazed me as they were truly placed in the same spot almost every single time--which is not easy.   One of her best moments came after recognizing the middle blocker cheating toward the outside. Instead of forcing the obvious set, she confidently delivered a quick ball to the middle, creating a clean attack. That decision demonstrated excellent court awareness and an understanding of how to put her hitters into positive scenarios.     Cunningham's smooth yet fierce hustle caught my eye right away. She would hustle to the ball, square her shoulders, and deliver a perfect in system ball almost every single time. Even if she just dug a crazy hard hit down the line, she was ready for the next rally. There were many plays that demonstrated her composure, athleticism, and willingness to give her teammates every opportunity to succeed.   Cunningham also had this wicked float serve where it seemed like it was going to miss long but would suddenly float either in-between zones or land right in front of the end line. After getting aces, she displayed this completive smile that made her teammates rest assure that she was going to fight for the next point just as hard.    Top Performing Illinois Showcase Liberos/DS:    Brosch displayed fearless defensive hustle during the entire showcase. She refused to let the ball touch the floor. After making an initial dig, she quickly got back to her feet and chased down the opponent's tip near the sideline, sending a controlled pass back to her teammates to extend the rally. Her relentless hustle and determination energized her team around her.   Brosch had this flattering energy from the very beginning that immediately caught my attention. She consistently cheered on her teammates on while making smart plays herself. Her backrow leadership will definitely take her and her teams far.     Bovinette was small but very mighty in the libero and middle back spot. Her reading of the game is something to note. She did an excellent job anticipating the hitter's attack. Before contact was even made, she adjusted her defensive position, read the angle perfectly, and dug a hard-driven ball with such control. Her instincts and ability to read the game suggest she has tremendous defensive potential as she continues to develop. You can literally say that Bovinette was reading the hitters like a book!     Gezing was a passing machine when it came to serve receive. Her passing consistency stood out throughout the entire showcase. Whether it was a free ball pass, or a chase ball pass, every single one of them headed into the right direction. On one particularly tough float serve, she stayed balanced, kept her platform steady and delivered a perfect pass directly into her setter's hands. Plays like that may not always fill that stat sheet, but they are the foundation of every successful offense. Gezing truly outplayed everyone in the serve receive game.    Congratulations to these Top-Performing setters and liberos from the Class of 2030! It was a lot of fun watching you all compete and share the court together. Keep working hard--the sky's the limit!
