Meet the Next Wave: Illinois Freshman Showcase

The freshman class of 2030 is full of promise. This showcase highlighted young athletes who are beginning to establish their identities on the court through their athleticism, effort, and volleyball IQ. Their passion for the game and untapped potential made this an exciting group to watch! These next few athletes immediately caught my attention with their loud, consistent communication and command on the court.    Szymczak was fun to watch! She chased down an overpassed first contact, squared her shoulders while on the move, and delivered a perfectly placed back set to the right side for an awesome kill. Her athleticism really showed during the entire showcase! She also did a very good job in leading her middles into a one ball set.     Crede displayed lots of volleyball IQ on her court. After a perfect serve-receive pass, she exploded into transition, attacked a high outside set, and ripped a sharp cross-court swing that landed untouched inside the end line. Her approach, arm speed, and confidence is what really stood out about her. She made every swing look effortless!     Gothberg was a very creative right-side attacker. A key play that I watched was when she was facing a well-formed double block, she patiently waited in the air before tooling the outside hand of the blocker for the point. Her vision and shot selection showed maturity beyond her years!     Chatman was super-fast and zoomed across the court diving for the ball! On a hard-driven cross-court attack, she absorbed the pace with a steady platform and delivered a perfect pass right to target. Her controlled digs allowed her court setter to smoothly run their offense. Chatman showed how important that first contact and communication is in order to run a consistent offense!     Nobilio really surprised us with her disciplined footwork and hustle in the back row. She read the hitter's tip before contact, she attempted a pancake to save the ball, and quickly got back into defensive position. Her relentless hustle extended rallies multiple times on her court. Nobilio truly sparked her team/s momentum during this showcase!     Kron is a 6'1'' middle, who was towering over her opponents. She recognized the setter's intentions very well, closed the block with excellent timing, and stuffed the opponent's many times with her large block. Her footwork and ability to read the offense made her a threat at the net!    I had a lot of fun watching all these different positions demonstrate their skills during the Illinois showcase. The effort, athleticism, and passion for the game were very evident throughout the showcase, making this a group that coaches and fans alike should keep an eye on in the years to come!
