Nebraska 16s and 17s Rolling after Opening Round of GJNC

Opening-round pool results are in the books, and the first divisional splits have been made. I may be biased, but I'm thrilled to see so many Nebraska teams still in the Gold hunt heading into Round 2.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Let's set up the final push. Thursday's pools will bring a flurry of action, but it's worth stepping back to see how we got here. The weekend started with a dose of adversity against Adversity, but 17 Synergy rallied from a Set 1 defeat to win in three. That triumph set off a string of three consecutive sweeps to propel [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] into the next Open wave.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Meanwhile, <strong>[program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Black</strong> was carving its own path to Gold in 17 USA. And this was about as good as it gets. 17 Black stormed to a 5-0 record in pool play, but the team still had a flair for the dramatic in Indy. This win streak is highlighted by two deuce victories in third sets against TVC and Iowa Select, giving [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] supporters no shortage of drama and intrigue.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>That ought to persist on Day 3.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline">More 17s Underdogs</span></strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Perhaps it's a misnomer to refer to any GJNC team as an "underdog," but a few Nebraska 17s teams outperformed their seeding to reach Thursday's top group.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>This includes both of the Great Plains representatives in the 17 American division. <strong>Club Legacy 17 Alpha</strong> generated plenty of Day 1 buzz after two emphatic sweeps, and the good times rolled on through the bulk of pool play. 17 Alpha's head-to-head victory over a 3-0 Milwaukee Jrs squad clinched first place in Pool 13 of the division. It's an impressive "overachievement" from a team slated fourth in its six-squad pool in 17 American.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Elsewhere in 17 American, <strong>Premier Nebraska 17 Black</strong> turned its third-seeded pool status into an outright victory. This didn't come easily, however, as 17 Black endured a three-peat of absolutely grueling tiebreaker contests. Premier Nebraska prevailed every time, and its first sweep of the event put 17 Black squarely in the top spot.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Like Club Legacy, <strong>Nebraska Juniors 17 Black</strong> was slotted fourth in its 17 Liberty group. A 3-0 Tuesday mark immediately nullified that hierarchy. The Lone Star Classic runners-up claimed a thrilling three-set win over AAC with a duo of deuce triumphs on Day 1. Nebraska Juniors eventually landed in the No. 2 spot in its pool, adding another layer of Great Plains intrigue to Thursday's schedule.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Don't forget about the Kearney crew! If there's any Nebraska 17s team that could embody the underdog spirit at GJNC, it might be <strong>AVC 17 Blue</strong>. The central Nebraska squad was slotted in the penultimate spot in its 17 Freedom group. No problem. Pool play isn't done, but Antelope carries a 5-1 record into its final Round 1 contest. Three Gold spots are up for grabs with four teams in the running. As we bounce around the map, we're reminded of how much Nebraska's club footprint has grown over the past few years.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>That brings us to <strong>South Central NE 16 Black</strong>, which hoisted championships at the Show Me Qualifier and the Great Plains Region Bid Tournament. Of course, this is also the same crew that visited last year's GJNC podium, too. 16 Black upgraded its bid to 16 National this time, but that didn't stop South Central from advancing with a third-place pool finish.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>And let's get [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] on the board. <strong>[program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 16 Black</strong> is poised to be the major Wave 2 torchbearer for this club after advancing through 16 USA pools. This is an eerily similar conversation to the one we just had about South Central NE. VCN aimed high, upgraded its bid, and still had the firepower to push through elite competition. While we still have underdogs on our mind, VCN 16 Black was the bottom-seeded team in its group. Shuffle the deck for Day 3 after 16 Black's second-place finish.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Premier Nebraska</strong> returns to the fray with <strong>16 Red</strong>'s hot start in 16 Liberty. Red-hot, perhaps. 16 Red put up a trio of wins to back up its strong form from the Show Me Qualifier. Based on other results in the division, this quick start was enough to secure Premier Nebraska's future plans. On to Round 2.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>We also have a chance to bring Nebraska ONE back into the mix. 16 Freedom's stacked field leaves one pool match to Thursday's gauntlet, but <strong>Nebraska ONE 16 Black</strong> is well-positioned with a 4-2 start. Every match result has come via a sweep, and that efficiency could be important. The journey is just beginning.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
