Defense is about so much more than digging the volleyball.

The best defenders read the game before the ball is ever contacted. They communicate, cover hitters, adjust off the block, and put themselves in position to make difficult plays look routine. Great liberos and defensive specialists rarely force the action. Instead, they stay composed, trust their training, and give their team confidence on every first contact.

This week, we're putting the spotlight on a few Class of 2027 back-row athletes who continue to stand out for the little things they do well.

Maya Singh does a nice job staying one step ahead of the play. She reads hitters well, anticipates where the ball is going, and adjusts quickly when touches change the play. Additionally, she stays active after the block, allowing her to cover extra court and keep rallies alive. That awareness, paired with her quick reactions, makes her a dependable first-contact player and one to keep an eye on.

Alyssa Valdez brings a calming presence to the back row. She moves with control, avoids unnecessary motion, and consistently puts herself in good passing positions. Furthermore, her communication stands out. She takes charge when the ball is hers, and her teammates clearly trust her to do so. Valdez is also engaged in off-block defense, giving her hitters the confidence to swing aggressively knowing she is ready behind them.

Corinne Cate Wiley competes with great urgency from the first serve to the final point. She covers ground well, stays balanced through contact, and keeps a clean platform in serve receive. Moreover, she reads the game early and does a nice job positioning herself before the ball arrives. Wiley's steady movement and court awareness allow her to make difficult plays look routine, and her willingness to battle for every touch gives her team another layer of confidence.
