River City Jrs 15 Red Completes Clean Sweep at AAU Nationals

Lightning strikes twice--in two different waves.

Remember when we lauded River City Jrs' tradition of success at AAU Nationals? That conversation was restarted by River City Jrs 15 Navy, which rose to the top of 15 Elite after Wave 2 in Orlando. Well, we now have another example of River City's preeminence in the Sunshine State.

And it's in the same age group. River City Jrs 15 Red has been on our radar since we watched the team soar to Gold contention at the Show Me Qualifier. This group wielded its winning form at various venues, from the USAV circuit to regional events. But, just like their 15 Navy counterparts, 15 Red brought its best for postseason play.

We have another clean sweep on the River City tab. This club is building an incredible future foundation in the 15s age group, and 15 Red has added to the vast collection of championship banners.

Escalating Drama

Like 15 Navy, River City Jrs 15 Red rolled to an unblemished record in Orlando. But this journey didn't come without some tension.

Still, it all started as swimmingly as it could have been. AAU Nationals is notorious for its long, grueling schedule, but 15 Red persevered and clicked through matches at a scorching pace. Round 1 brought three emphatic sweeps, and the same story played out a day later. River City started its 15 Elite trek as the top seed in Pool 9, so the crew had done plenty to back up that high placement.

But it didn't stop there. The sweep streak extended to eight after wins over Virago and 305VBC in Round 3. The first dose of major adversity came against Tampa North, which claimed the opening set of Thursday's finale. That test allowed 15 Red to flex its resilience and claim a three-set win to preserve a perfect overall record.

Perhaps that was the prelude to further pressure-packed moments. But, before that, River City Jrs returned to its dominant ways with a sweep over Sanford Sports to reach the Gold bracket. From there, straight-set wins over Crossfire and Northern Lights followed. 15 Red was two more wins away from the title.

Cue the drama. Like its contest against Tampa North, 15 Red faced an early deficit against 863 Elite in the semifinals. River City forged a quick response with a 25-13 victory and rolled in the tiebreaker. One more.

A border battle was teed up for the title. 15 Red met Kairos 15 Gamma, and we were treated with another tiebreaker tussle for the ages. For the third time of the weekend, River City Jrs clawed back from a Set 1 defeat to win in three and secure the championship.

River City's 15s have put us on notice for the next few years.

Flying High with the '29s

Clearly, River City Jrs has a lot to build around in the Class of 2029. In addition to 15 Navy's championship crew in Wave 2, 15 Red is building its own cast of stock-rising athletes.

It all starts in the front row. 15 Red's group of terminators impressed us throughout the spring, and the firepower flourished in Orlando. High-flying pin hitter Gillian Bash earned divisional MVP honors for her all-around influence in the 15 Red rotation. The Omaha Mercy standout put up impressive numbers last fall, setting up her club climb with River City Jrs. Bash has been willing to play on either pin for 15 Red, but she is also a six-rotation mainstay whose quality ball control keeps her in the middle-back area.

Other pin hitters have risen to the occasion, too. 15 Red has been keen on running two-setter offenses this year, allowing Joslynn Emmons and Brooke Cieslik to showcase their physicality on the right antenna. This duo can rotate seamlessly into the lineup and maintain 15 Red's patented pin-to-pin balance.

That balance extends to the left side, where Josephine Moore has operated alongside Bash to fortify 15 Red's outside presence. Moore's terrific range and court vision yielded plenty of well-placed tip shots in Orlando. Of course, this do-everything attacker can also bring the heat when needed.

And don't forget about the middles. 15 Red has rotated between Chudier Kutey, Kinsley Bower, and Millie Kauffman through the 2026 campaign, and they each offered unique contributions to 15 Red's championship effort. Kutey reminded us of the game-changing length and power we saw at Show Me. This was a breakout event for Bower and Kauffman, who took the lead at the net with their swings in front of the setter.

This sounds like an ideal transition to the setters. Paisley Smejkal joined Bash on the all-tournament team after displaying a full array of skills at the setter spot. This is an athlete who doesn't need to pilot a 5-1 offense to make a huge impact. Smejkal's right-back defense and on-court energy set her apart, and 15 Red's setter excellence doesn't stop there. Natalie Culp can immediately rotate in and maintain the up-tempo style that makes River City so unstoppable.

It also helps to have some outstanding backcourt specialists laying the foundation. Peyton Clausen completed the all-tournament trio for 15 Red, commanding the libero jersey throughout the charge through AAUs. She worked in tandem with Brystol Thompson to form a reliable, unflappable line in the serve-receive pattern. Thompson also brings some outside hitter experience to the fray, adding to 15 Red's lineup possibilities.

And River City found all the right combinations en route to the championship. It's a movie we've seen before.

Lightning strikes twice--in two different waves.
