The jump into the 16 Open division is one of the biggest an athlete will experience during her club career.

For many, recruiting conversations begin to feel real. Expectations increase, roles become more defined, and athletes quickly discover that talent alone is no longer enough to separate themselves. The athletes who continue moving forward are often the ones who learn how to handle those expectations without allowing them to change who they are.

The teams recognized below have earned their place through outstanding performances against some of the best competition in the country. Their success reflects athletes who have continued developing their skills while embracing accountability, resilience, and the willingness to improve throughout an entire season.

Handling Expectations

One of the biggest changes I notice at this age is how athletes respond when expectations become part of the conversation.

By the 16 Open season, many athletes have established reputations. They may be ranked, receiving recruiting interest, or expected to play significant roles for successful teams. While recognition can create confidence, it can also create pressure. The athletes who continue developing are usually the ones who refuse to let outside expectations replace the habits that helped them get there.

They continue asking questions, accepting coaching, and searching for ways to improve instead of assuming they have already arrived. They understand that every season presents new challenges, and they embrace the responsibility that comes with being counted on by teammates and coaches alike.

What California's Top Teams Usually Share

While every program has its own identity, the strongest teams continue developing habits that allow them to compete at a consistently high level. Their athletes understand how to manage emotions when momentum shifts, communicate with confidence during difficult moments, and make adjustments without losing belief in themselves or their teammates. They compete with purpose regardless of the score, remain coachable when corrections are made, and recognize that leadership often shows up through actions long before it is heard through words.

Those qualities become increasingly important because the margins between winning and losing continue getting smaller. Physical ability may create opportunities, but maturity, consistency, and decision-making are often what allow talented teams to sustain success throughout an entire season.

What Athletes Should Focus On This Summer

If your goal is to compete at the highest level, spend this summer preparing for more than just the next tournament.

Continue developing your volleyball skills, but also become intentional about how you communicate, respond to adversity, and lead within your team. Seek feedback from coaches, challenge yourself against stronger competition, and become comfortable being uncomfortable. Growth at this stage rarely comes from doing what you're already good at. It comes from identifying weaknesses and having the confidence to address them.

College coaches aren't simply evaluating the athlete you are today. They're projecting the athlete you'll become over the next four years. Give them every reason to believe your best volleyball is still ahead of you.

🔥 Athletes

The athletes who continue separating themselves at this level are rarely the ones focused only on recognition. They are the ones who continue learning, continue competing, and continue improving after expectations begin to rise. Stay committed to your development, trust the work you've put in, and remember that growth doesn't stop once recruiting begins.

🎯 College Coaches

The athletes competing at this stage are beginning to reveal how they respond to meaningful expectations. Beyond the physical tools, continue evaluating the qualities that often predict long-term success: coachability, emotional maturity, leadership, consistency, and the ability to make adjustments under pressure. Those habits frequently become the difference-makers as recruiting moves forward.

🙏 Parents & Supporters

Thank you for continuing to support your athletes as the journey becomes more demanding. Expectations naturally increase during these years, but your encouragement, perspective, and belief remain just as important as ever. Continue celebrating effort, resilience, and growth, because those qualities will serve your athlete long after the final club season comes to an end.
