Development is Starting to Show, Five Names Making Their Move

Another Class of 2028 rankings update has arrived, and Florida's junior class continues to become increasingly difficult to sort. The newest PrepDig board now holds 179 athletes, creating a deeper collection of talent with players at numerous positions showing meaningful changes in their games. At this stage, movement is about far more than one impressive tournament or a handful of highlight-worthy moments. Development has to become visible in the details. Those details are being built in weight rooms, during position training, through thousands of practive contacts, at college camps, and inside pressure-filled matches. Physical maturity certainly plays a role, but so does volleyball IQ. Decision-making becomes faster. Footwork gets cleaner. Players begin recognizing situations earlier instead of reacting late. Confidence starts coming from preparation rather than emotion. For the Class of 2028, those layers are beginning to separate athletes who simply possess ability from players learning how to repeatedly put that ability to work.

The five athletes featured in this update offer different examples of that progression. Some are sharpening specialized roles. Others bring positional versatility that gives coaches multiple options. Across the group, however, one theme connects them: their games are becoming more complete.

There is an unhurried quality to [player_tooltip player_id='784966' first='Lila' last='Varitek']'s defensive presence that should never be mistaken for a lack of urgency. The DS/L anticipates action early, allowing preparation to repalce panic once the ball crosses the net. Varitek operates from a low base and gets where needed without adding unnecessary movement. That economy in her footwork becomes especially valuable when rallies speed up. Instead of creating extra distance for herself, she takes efficient routes toward the ball and willingly closes space around attackers when coverage requires it. There is no hesitation about getting into the traffic surrounding a play. Communication adds another dimension. Varitek makes herself heard from the back court, helping organize the floor while staying engaged between contacts. Her year-round experience also deserves attention. Splitting time between indoor and beach volleyball exposes Varitek to two very different environments. Beach demands ownership of considerable court space, while indoor play requires fitting individual reads into a larger defensive system. That combination continues to add interesting layers to Varitek's back-row identity. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

Versatility takes on greater value when an athlete understands how to make each role function, and [player_tooltip player_id='1003052' first='Tianna' last='Mcleod'] continues to show intriguing possibilities as both a setter and righto-side attacker. Distribution stands out because Mcleod isn't simply sending hittable balls toward a location. Different attackers require different trajectories, and Mcleod adjusts elevation and placement to meet the hitter rather than forcing the hitter to compensate for the set. That becomes particularly noticeable when connecting through the middle, where timing margins shrink considerably. A fast release paired with controlled hands helps preserve offensive tempo and gives attackers an opportunity to enter their swings without unnecessary disruption. Mcleod also refuses to become disconnected after completing a defensive assignment. The transition toward offense happens immediately. That ability to move from defending a play into creating the next scoring opportunity gives Mcleod's game continuity, while experience on the right pin provides another perspective on what attackers need from the player distributing the ball. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

[player_tooltip player_id='510964' first='Lily' last='Sigety'] brings a different form of dual-position value.at 5-foot-10, the right-side attacker/setter is developing several pieces that translate across the front and back rows. Her movement away from the net creates the necessary room to build into a measured slow-to-fast approach, and the acceleration arrives with purpose as Sigety enters the final portion of her attack. More importantly, the swing does not appear limited to one destination. Shot variation gives her options from either antenna and makes placement part of the equation instead of relying exclusively on force. At the net, Sigety establishes a firm blocking presence and works to take away usable space from opposing hitters. Rotate into defense and another part of the skill set emerges. She recognizes open seams and works into them quickly. Once settled behind the ball, Sigety keeps the passing platform composed and uses purposeful angles to direct contacts toward target. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

There is nothing passive about [player_tooltip player_id='907296' first='Kerrington' last='Smith']'s approach to back-row volleyball. Hustle fuels the DS/L, but the more interesting piece is how Smith combines effort with an expanding selection of defensive solutions. She remains prepared close to the floor and is comfortable using her hands when the speed or trajectory of an attack calls for it. That willingness matters. Back-row defenders cannot solve every ball with identical technique, particularly when hard-driven contacts begin arriving above the traditional window. Smith also recognizes moments when the second contact becomes hers. When the setter takes first contact or a rally breaks structure, she can step forward and use her hands to help stabilize the possession rather than simply sending a survival ball upward. That awareness can be an important separator as the game becomes faster. Add an assertive voice behind the block, and Smith provides teammates with information while remaining deeply involved in the rally. The energy catches attention, but the decisions accompanying it are what gibe that energy substance. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

Movement connects nearly every part of [player_tooltip player_id='751033' first='Madyson' last='Boling']'s game. The setter/ defensive specialist remains low while working across the back row, constantly repositioning instead of becoming stationary once the opponent initiates an attack. That activity allows Boling to occupy useful defensive space and prepares her for the next responsibility before the rally fully develops the transition front back-row responsibilities toward setting target is especially encouraging. Boling finds a natural cadence between the two jobs rather than treating defense and distribution as separate sequences. Once in position to run offense, she provides attackers with clean hitting windows that allow the next contact to remain aggressive. Passing brings another positive detail. Boling shapes her platform with intentional angles and finishes toward target rather than allowing the contact to drift away from its destination. That controlled finish gives the ball direction. For an athlete balancing setting and defensive duties, being able to connect the first and second contacts offers valuable flexibility and makes Boling an interesting name as the 2028 class continues evolving. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

The Rankings Are Getting Deeper - And So Are the Games

A rankings update provides a snapshot, but development rarely happens in snapshots. It happens between them. The athlete seen today is being compared against the version observed months earlier, and for this Class of 2028 group, those differences are becoming increasingly noticeable. Training is producing stronger movement patterns. Practice repetitions are creating better technical habits. Live competition is demanding faster choices. College camps are exposing athletes to different expectations and instruction. Mental growth is helping players handle mistakes, pressure, and changing match situations with greater maturity.

With 179 athletes now inside the Class of 2028 rankings, standing still becomes increasingly difficult. There are too many players developing and too many opportunities for the order to change. Varitek, McLeod, Sigety, Smith, and Boling each bring a different skill profile into the conversation, yet all five demonstrate why continues evaluation matters. The next jump does not always arrive through a dramatic new skill. Sometimes it appears in one fewer wasted step, a better second-contact decision, a more purposeful transition, a smarter attacking choice, or an earlier defensive read. And those details add up. The 2028 class still has plenty of volleyball ahead. If this update is any indication, the race through the rankings is becoming considerably more interesting.
