For young outside hitters, development is rarely about adding one bigger swing.

The position eventually asks for almost everything: serve receive, defense, transition, blocking, attacking out of system, communication and the ability to make good decisions when the set is not exactly where it was expected.

At the Georgia Stock Up Showcase, these five pins showed different pieces of that larger picture. None needs to have every part mastered yet. What mattered was seeing the foundations they are already building and the areas of their games that could continue expanding as they gain more high-school and club experience.

Presley's development stood out as much through her presence as through any individual contact. She brought consistent energy, communicated with the players around her and remained engaged between repetitions. At 6-foot, she already has useful size for the pin, but learning how to combine those physical tools with communication, movement and six-rotation responsibility is what can make her increasingly valuable. The next few seasons should give Presley plenty of opportunities to refine her approach, ball control and attacking toolbox. What Stock Up showed was an athlete already comfortable being involved—and that willingness to communicate and compete gives her a strong base from which to build the technical pieces. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Aungelique already possesses physical tools that are easy to notice, particularly her length and reach at the pin. What will make those tools increasingly valuable is the way she continues building the skills around them. During Stock Up, she showed willingness to attack aggressively while also staying involved after the swing and working back into the next phase of the rally. That matters because size alone does not create a complete outside hitter. The athletes who continue progressing learn how to pair that reach with cleaner transition, stronger first contact and increasingly intentional attacking decisions. Aungelique has a physical foundation that gives her room to develop in several directions. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Alana showed one of the more encouraging developmental habits for a young pin: she kept working to get back into transition. Instead of remaining close to the net after her first responsibility, she created space and gave herself another chance to approach with momentum. That repeated movement may not always become the highlight, but it is what allows hitters to stay available throughout longer rallies. She also handled the changing timing of different setters without appearing rushed. As her shot selection and ball control continue developing, Alana's ability to keep moving and recreate attacking opportunities could become a major strength. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Sarika's physical foundation immediately gives her something interesting to build around. Her vertical mechanics stood out during the showcase: she organized her approach well, created lift and worked toward contacting the ball from a strong position rather than simply jumping underneath it. For a young hitter, that matters because good mechanics create more possibilities later. As Sarika becomes more comfortable recognizing the block and using different areas of the court, the same athletic ability that currently creates height can begin creating attacking variety. The next phase is not necessarily swinging harder. It is learning how to use that elevation to see more, adjust more and score in more than one way. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Sydney showed a controlled approach to the position that gave her game a steady feel. She did not appear interested in forcing every attacking opportunity into a highlight. Instead, she worked to stay balanced, create a usable swing and remain involved when the rally continued. That decision-making is an important piece for a developing outside because complete hitters eventually have to know when to attack aggressively and when simply keeping the offense alive is the better choice. Sydney also continued resetting into transition and staying connected to the play when the set went elsewhere. As she adds more attacking range and becomes increasingly comfortable taking responsibility in serve receive, that composure could become one of the qualities that helps hold the rest of her game together. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Sydney, Sarika, Alana, Aungelique and Presley are developing in different ways.

For one athlete, the next step may be expanding attacking range. For another, it could be serve receive, transition efficiency or learning how to use physical tools more strategically.

That is part of the value of seeing young athletes in a showcase setting.

The goal is not to determine who has already finished developing.

It is to identify the pieces that are beginning to come together—and imagine what the game may look like once more of them do.

Subscribe to Prep Dig+ for continued Georgia showcase coverage, rankings, player evaluations and recruiting insight as we follow these athletes through the next stages of their development.

Note to GA Athletes:

If you'd like to be considered for future coverage, please send me your high school season schedule and share a little bit about yourself so I can come support you and share your story.
