High School Season Is Here: Make It Count

Club season gives athletes months of tournaments, qualifiers, showcases, and opportunities to be evaluated. Then August arrives, athletes put on a different jersey, and the entire rhythm changes.

High school volleyball is here.

For some athletes, that means six rotations and a major role. For others, it means competing for playing time, learning behind an older player, or realizing that the role they imagined having may not be the role they receive.

All of those experiences can move your volleyball journey forward.

The key is understanding where you are, communicating with the people around you, and making sure your recruiting efforts don't disappear simply because your role looks different this fall.

One of the most important conversations you can have at the beginning of high school season has nothing to do with college recruiting.

Know Your Role Before You Worry About Your Recruiting

Talk to your high school coach.

Understand where you currently fit on the roster, what your coach needs from you, and what you need to improve if you want your role to grow. Are you expected to play six rotations? Are you competing for a starting position? Are you primarily serving or defending? Are you developing behind an upperclassman? Are you going to contribute more in practice than you do during matches?

Don't guess.

There is a huge difference between being disappointed with your role and understanding your role. Once you know what your coach sees, you can begin doing something productive about it.

If you're not starting, ask what you need to improve. If you're playing three rotations and want six, find out what's keeping you off the court for the other three. If you're primarily a practice player this season, learn how you can make your teammates better while developing the parts of your game that will prepare you for a larger role later.

Your role today isn't necessarily your role forever, but how you handle it tells coaches a lot about the athlete you're becoming.

Your High School Schedule Belongs on Instagram

College coaches cannot follow a schedule they don't know exists.

As soon as your high school schedule is finalized, post it. Make it easy to find, save it to a Highlight, and make sure your Instagram bio clearly identifies your graduation year, high school, club, position, and other relevant recruiting information.

Then keep your account current throughout the season.

If your jersey number changes, update it. If a match time changes, share it. If you receive an evaluation or meaningful recognition, post it. If you have new film, don't leave last club season's highlights pinned at the top of your account while your high school season is happening.

Think of your recruiting Instagram as a living résumé. Someone discovering you for the first time should be able to understand who you are, where you're playing, and how to continue following you without having to search for the information.

Give College Coaches a Reason to Open Your Email

High school season does not mean emailing coaches the score after every match.

You want communication to mean something.

If your vertical increased, that's an update. If you've taken on a new role, that's an update. A meaningful tournament finish, new highlight film, an academic achievement, a significant evaluation, or measurable development in your game can all give you a reason to reconnect.

The goal is to help coaches follow your progress, not your play-by-play.

That distinction matters because every email should add another piece to the picture a coach is building of you. Over time, those updates can show an athlete who is improving physically, accepting greater responsibility, succeeding academically, and continuing to develop her game.

Before you hit send, ask yourself one question: Does this email teach the coach something new about me?

If it does, send it.

If You're Not Starting, You Still Need to Be More

This is especially important on high school rosters carrying 12, 14, 16, or even more athletes.

Not everyone is going to play meaningful minutes.

That can be frustrating, particularly for an athlete accustomed to playing a significant role during club season, but disappearing from your recruiting efforts for three months isn't the answer.

Practice becomes incredibly important.

Use those months to become better technically, physically, and mentally. Compete against your starters, take advantage of every repetition, and treat your role in the practice gym as development rather than punishment.

And when college coaches attend your matches, remember that evaluation doesn't necessarily begin with the first serve.

They're watching warmups.

They're seeing hitting lines. They're watching movement, arm speed, physicality, communication, energy, and how athletes interact with teammates. If you know your match opportunities may be limited, warmups are not something to casually move through.

Make those contacts count.

You should also look for opportunities outside your high school lineup to continue being evaluated. A PrepDig Showcase can provide another environment to compete, receive an evaluation, create recruiting content, and put your game in front of people who may not get enough opportunities to evaluate you during high school matches.

Playing time affects exposure. It doesn't have to eliminate it.

Turn Your Instagram Into Evidence of Volleyball IQ

Highlights show coaches what happened.

Your voice can show them why it happened.

One of the easiest ways athletes can create better recruiting content during high school season is by interviewing themselves after matches.

Pick one or two meaningful plays and explain them. Talk about what you saw defensively, why you chose a particular shot, how you adjusted to a block, what changed in serve receive, or what your team did differently after losing a set.

You don't need a professional interview or an elaborate setup. You need enough confidence to talk intelligently about your game.

Instead of posting another kill with music over it, occasionally tell the person watching:

What did you see? What decision did you make? What did you learn?

That's a very different type of recruiting content because you're giving coaches an opportunity to see the volleyball player behind the highlight.

Keep Learning While You're Playing

High school season gets busy quickly, and this is one habit I would love to see every volleyball family adopt:

Read one PrepDig article every day.

Not just the articles with your name in them.

Read about your position. Read evaluations of athletes older than you. Read recruiting articles. Read rankings and understand why players are moving. Read about athletes from other states and different levels of competition. When a scout describes an athlete's decision-making, communication, footwork, range, physicality, or impact, ask yourself whether those same qualities show up in your game.

The more volleyball you understand, the better volleyball player you can become.

Reading also directly supports the exposure we're able to provide athletes. Every article you open helps make this work possible and allows me to keep covering events, evaluating players, telling athletes' stories, and creating the visibility they deserve. If every volleyball family committed to reading just one PrepDig article each day, it would make a meaningful difference.

Your support can be that simple.

High School Season Is Different. Your Recruiting Doesn't Stop.

You don't need to turn every high school match into a recruiting event.

Enjoy playing for your school. Build relationships with teammates you may not play club with. Compete for something that represents your campus and your community. Learn from your coaches, embrace whatever role you've earned, and allow yourself to experience a different part of volleyball.

At the same time, keep moving your recruiting journey forward.

Know your role and communicate with your coach. Keep your PrepDig Player Profile and Instagram current. Post your schedule. Send meaningful updates to college coaches instead of filling their inboxes. Create content that demonstrates how you think about the game. If playing time is limited, find additional opportunities to compete and be evaluated.

Most importantly, don't mistake a smaller high school role for a smaller future.

Three months can change an athlete tremendously when she uses them well.

Let's Have a Great High School Season

To every athlete putting on her high school jersey this fall, good luck.

Whether you're walking onto the court as a returning six-rotation starter or entering the gym knowing most of your contribution may happen in practice, there is something available for you this season. Your job is to find it, learn from it, and leave November a better volleyball player than you were in August.

I'll be watching, writing, evaluating, and hopefully seeing many of you in gyms throughout California this fall. Keep tagging @PrepDigCA, keep your profiles updated, and keep giving us reasons to tell your story.

And please, keep reading.

The best way to support PrepDig and athlete exposure is simply by opening an article. Your readership allows us to continue covering athletes, creating evaluations, providing recruiting education, and giving more players an opportunity to be seen.

One article a day.

If every volleyball family did that, imagine how many more athletes we could continue shining a light on.

Good luck, California!

🔥 Athletes: High school season may change your jersey, your teammates, and even your role, but it should not stop your recruiting momentum. Keep your PrepDig Player Profile and Instagram current, post your high school schedule, communicate meaningful updates to college coaches, and continue looking for opportunities to be evaluated if your match reps are limited. Most importantly, keep learning. Read evaluations, follow athletes at your position, and pay attention to what coaches and scouts value. Your role this fall is only one part of your journey, and how you use it can help prepare you for what comes next. Sign up for the PrepDig Showcase following the Durango Fall Classic to start your exposure, and subscribe to make sure your next performance does not go unnoticed.

📣 High School Coaches: Thank you for helping athletes understand that development does not always look like six rotations and a starting position. Sometimes the most important growth happens in practice, while learning a new role, competing behind an older player, or being challenged in ways an athlete did not expect. Continue having honest conversations with your players about where they stand, what they need to improve, and how they can contribute. Those conversations give athletes direction and help families keep one season in perspective. Keep your high school updated with the High School Team Database and stay connected to every opportunity we create for exposure.

🎯 College Coaches: High school season provides another opportunity to evaluate athletes in a completely different environment. Roles change, systems change, teammates change, and athletes are often asked to do things they may not do during club season. As you return to your own seasons, PrepDig will continue providing evaluations, player updates, rankings, profiles, and coverage that make it easier to follow how prospects across California are developing. Use a Premium College Subscription to identify the talent.

🙏 Parents & Supporters: Your athlete's high school role may look very different from her club role, and this is an important time to help her keep perspective. Encourage communication with her coach before assumptions are made, celebrate development that doesn't necessarily show up in playing time, and help her continue taking ownership of her recruiting journey. One season, one lineup, and one role do not determine where an athlete ultimately goes. Upgrade to a PrepDig+ Subscription to access exclusive rankings, deeper analysis, and the full Prospect Index to follow every athlete's journey.
