Opening Day 2026: Nebraska’s Marquee Matchups to Follow

Away we go!

Nebraska's 2026 high school season officially begins tonight. It's hard to believe the yearly cycle has already reached this exciting day, but we're poised and ready to cover all the drama that the fall campaign brings.

It all starts here. Opening Thursday is always stacked with marquee matchups that give us a very, very early glimpse at Nebraska's top prep squads. This slate usually features a medley of yearly triangulars, cross-town contests, and other high-profile slugfests to kick off the season. We're covering a little of everything today.

Let the games begin.

Waverly @ Lincoln Lutheran

Here's one of those yearly rites of passage.

We'll never get tired of Waverly and Lincoln Lutheran squaring off to open every high school season. These two Star City-area contenders have produced so many classics lately, and we may be due for another one on Coach Ziegler Court.

Waverly has designs on scaling the Class B mountaintop. The Vikings have leaned on their Class of 2027 for the past few seasons, and this is their swan song season on the Nebraska prep circuit. Minnesota-bound setter McKinley Moser has retained her all-around leadership role in the Waverly offense, and the momentum of four Open qualifications with VCN 17 Elite won't hurt, either. Gracie and Hallie Lauenstein join forces on the outside once again, and we'll see plenty of ball control output from Emmalyn Quinn and Kolbee Kroemer along the end line.

If you're looking for some new leaders and fresh faces, you'll probably find them on Lincoln Lutheran's side of the net. Of course, we still have returning contributors like McKenzie Sidlo, Claire Holle, and Meredith Masters. They'll be back as trendsetting starters. But we're also looking forward to Jayla Green's continued climb in the Warrior offense, alongside many of her underclassman peers. Thursday's lineup card will be fascinating.

Norris @ Aurora

We're two-for-two on Class B versus Class C1.

What an early barometer. Norris and Aurora meet as part of the annual triangular that also brings Wahoo into the mix. This triad has always given us some compelling early notes, and this year's duel will be no different.

The plot thickens with all the talent Aurora has stockpiled heading into 2026. The setter-hitter duo of Hailey Hoff and Kaitlyn Staehr has produced exceptional results on the national club circuit with South Central NE. That productivity persists with the Huskies, who landed hosting rights for this year's opening-week meeting. Look out for Aurora's cast of VCNebraska stars, led by Elizabeth Luebbe, Baya Chamness, and Zaiah Anson.

Of course, toppling a juggernaut is no easy task. Norris is the Class B favorite yet again. Future Husker Malorie Boesiger commands a Titan offense that will lean heavily on senior superstars like Alli Bornschlegl and Kaelynn Lottman. Loryn Piening anchors the operation in the middle and adds to the D1-bound talent. All eyes on the three-peat.

https://twitter.com/KingsleyATK/status/1986974967481651613?s=20

Seward @ Milford

Please excuse us for addressing a third Class B-Class C1 contest. It's the place to be on Day 1.

Like our prior discussion on Norris, we have a defending champ to see in this one. Milford hoisted last year's Class C1 crown behind the constant offensive onslaught of Shayla Rautenberg and Braelynn Muller. Both 2028 stars are back for more this fall, and they're joined by a strong defensive unit led by Libbie Reil and Adalyn Cisneros.

Don't discount Seward's steely veterans, however. Kennedy Dominy and Taegan Weber form a strong combo at setter. They'll have no shortage of weapons to wield at the net, including Jackie Eberspacher, Carley Kimbrough, and Ella Peterson. The Nebraska ONE-VCNebraska connections are strong with this roster.

Pierce @ Stanton

Of course, we have a small-town selection for you.

Pierce and Stanton lead us off in 2026. The Bluejays have been a common sight at the state tournament this decade, especially with Drake commit Nora Herian hammering away on the outside. This high-flying hitter should have a stellar supporting cast, with Kendyl Olson and Adrienne Riggert adding to the team's ball control and physicality. Class C1 knows all about this tremendous trio.

We'll slide over to Class C2 to find Stanton. The Mustangs posted an impressive 23-9 mark last year and came tantalizingly close to the postseason stage. A five-set defeat against eventual runner-up Laurel-Concord-Coleridge was all it took.

Pony up for another year. Junior terminator Bridget Marotz returns after soaring past four kills per set and a 0.300-plus hitting clip. Bergan Pohlman can set up Marotz or take attacking duties into her own hands. Stanton has its share of seniors to replace from last year's crew, but the foundation has been laid for multi-year success.

Away we go!
