And we got to talk about them. These athletes are some of the early leaders in Michigan in the defensive department. These athletes are the ones that frustrate the heck out of their opponents. Swing as hard as you can, they're there. Want to get tricky with an off speed shot? Forget it. These defenders are ON IT.

Let's talk about some of the early DIG stat leaders out of Michigan as of September 14th.

*All stats are received from MaxPreps, if you know an athlete with eye popping stats, be sure to let us know on instagram at PrepDigMichigan*

Mayla Church - Kalamazoo Christian

219 Digs Through 38 Sets

There is never a time where you won't see Kalamazoo Christian without an elite player on the court. Mayla Church looks to be the next in line to anchor this powerhouse program to another deep run in the post season. From the back court, Church has been electrifying. Through just 38 sets, Church is well into the 200 range for total digs, a number that'll surely be doubled, if not tripled by the end of the season.

[player_tooltip player_id='916647' first='Alayna' last='Schiller'] - Hart

204 Digs Through 33 Sets

Not far behind Church, [player_tooltip player_id='916647' first='Alayna' last='Schiller'] is coming in hot in the back row. As the libero for Hart, Schiller has been making some serious waves in the off-colroed jersey. Anything that is coming her way is not going down without a fight (or at all). Schiller's play has been a catalyst to Hart's winning season thus far.

Abbey Opalewski - Utica

201 Digs Through 53 Sets

This isn't the first, nor will it be the last time we hear from Utica on the top ten lists. Almost doubling the field in amount of sets played, doesn't make Abbey Opalewski's play any less prolific. Right behind Schiller, Opalewski has also crossed the 200 dig mark on the season, an impressive feat for so early in the season.

Saige Ososki - Morley Stanwood

179 Digs Through 36 Sets

Morley Stanwood not only has the offense, but it has the defense to battle with the best in the state. Saige Ososki is the leader in this department for the Mohawks. Just through 36 sets, Ososki is racing toward the 200 dig mark. Her numbers is nearly doubled to that of her 2025 season.

[player_tooltip player_id='761443' first='Meg' last='Schreur'] - South Christian

162 Digs Through 34 Sets

There's no surprise that South Christian continues to be a dominant force in the Division 2 space when it has this kind of defense from [player_tooltip player_id='761443' first='Meg' last='Schreur']. This is a returning libero for SC that showed huge signs of excellence in her sophomore season, and now you're really seeing it come into play.

Olivia Runnals - Yale

151 Digs Through 44 Sets

Yale may be a team on the rise. This isn't the first, nor is it going to be the last time we see a Yale player on these lists. While the freshman is holding it down offensively, Olivia Runnels is the heart and soul of the back court. Through 44 sets, Runnals has eclipsed the 150 digs mark. No matter where she finds herself, Runnals is picking up balls left and right.

[player_tooltip player_id='816366' first='Madeline' last='Kozuch'] - Morley Stanwood

143 Digs Through 36 Sets

Good luck getting a ball down on Morley Stanwood's side. Not only is their libero a defensive dynamo, but then they have [player_tooltip player_id='816366' first='Madeline' last='Kozuch'] out there. If she doesn't dig you first, she'll surely finish you on the attack. This isn't the first list we've seen Kozuch on and it may not be the last.

[player_tooltip player_id='709804' first='McKenzie' last='Reid'] - Lake Orion

141 Digs Through 34 Sets

Coming into her junior campaign, [player_tooltip player_id='709804' first='McKenzie' last='Reid'] is playing some of her best volleyball yet. She had a big sophomore season with a 379 dig season, this year, she looks to eclipse that number by the end of the regular season! Lake Orion has played quite a tough schedule thus far and further proves Reid's growth.

[player_tooltip player_id='775991' first='Sydney' last='Manning'] - Lakeview

132 Digs Through 35 Sets

There is no surprise that this player would be on this list, [player_tooltip player_id='775991' first='Sydney' last='Manning'] is one of the most complete players in the state. As good of an attacker, she is somehow a better back row player as well. Your quintessential outside hitter, playing the entire game. Not only does she lead Lakeview in digs, but in kills as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='834387' first='Kylee' last='Backus'] - Utica

129 Digs Through 53 Sets

Just as much as she brings with her offense, [player_tooltip player_id='834387' first='Kylee' last='Backus'] brings more with her defense! She's a kills leader and rounds out the top ten in digs leader as well. Backus alongside Opalewski shape up as a defensive tandem that is quite too difficult to muscle through.

Don't Miss a single moment of ALL THINGS VOLLEYBALL ON Line Shot Volleyball on Instagram, Tik Tok and Facebook!

NCAA Weekend In Review:

#14 Purdue Upsets #8 SMU after Upsetting #3 Kentucky & Texas

The BEST in COLLEGE and the BEST in HIGH SCHOOL in ONE CITY?!
