First Contact, Big Impact: 2028 Liberos to Know

Before the setter can run the offense and the hitter can finish, somebody has to handle that first contact. Nevada's Class of 2028 features defenders who take on that responsibility, extending rallies and giving their teams another opportunity to score. Here are six 2028 players whose work in the back row is helping set up what happens next at the net.    Ford came into her junior season with a commitment to UNLV and a Nationals bid earned with Top Flight 16 National Black this past spring. She has carried that momentum into the fall, recording 269 digs through 61 sets for Faith Lutheran and averaging 4.4 per set. Those numbers speak for themselves, and Ford still has another high school season ahead of her.     Norton already has plenty of varsity experience, and she continues to produce for Pahrump Valley. Her 250 digs through 72 sets put her at 3.5 per set this season. She is one of the 2028 players whose name keeps coming up when you look at the state's dig totals.     Birch plays more than one position for Southeast Career Tech, but her 207 digs are reason enough to include her here. She is averaging 3.0 digs per set through 69 sets while also being listed as an outside hitter, libero and defensive specialist. That kind of flexibility gives the Roadrunners options with their lineup.      Flores has put together a strong defensive total for Cheyenne with 172 digs in 63 sets, averaging 2.7 per set. There is still plenty of season left, but she has already given us a solid reason to see major movement in the next rankings release.     Sunrise Mountain's published stats cover just 17 sets for Dominguez, so her line comes with a smaller sample than most players on this list. Even so, 84 digs and a 4.9 digs-per-set average stand out. She also adds 80 receptions and 16 aces to her stat line.     Watkins' season is a good reminder to look beyond digs when evaluating a back-row player. She has 38 digs through 35 sets, but she has also handled 136 receptions and recorded 25 assists.
