Kansas never runs out of quality setters.

The Class of 2028 has officially risen to upperclassman status, opening up infinite leadership opportunities and new venues for growth. At the same time, most 2028s are still navigating their recruiting journey and looking for the best fit at the next level. Kansas always contributes its share of prep stars to the college game, so we want to do our part to highlight as many names as possible.

And we have several names rising to prominence in the early days of the 2026 high school season. Setters have been especially productive out of the gate, and these juniors are taking the reins.

This one's off the recruiting board. Bain, who will represent 2025 NCAA D1 runner-up Kentucky at the next level, has reassumed her spot as the all-around signal-caller for Mill Valley. Last year's Jaguars earned a podium finish in Class 6A behind Bain's pin-to-pin distribution and unwavering aggression at the net. She has proven herself at every level on the prep volleyball circuit, especially while playing up a year with her Dynasty 17 Black squad. Bain will now face off against many of her club teammates while chasing another trip to the 6A postseason. An undefeated start to 2026 is a good omen.

We alluded to George's stock-riser status after our most recent overhaul of the 2028 rankings. She has established herself as one of the top junior prospects in southwestern Kansas, piloting her Garden City team to winning marks in each of her underclassman seasons. We don't have a large sample size in 2026 yet, but George's opening-day numbers drew immediate attention. The Buffaloes stormed to a 4-1 record behind George's whopping 10.9 assists per set. Expect this versatile weapon to make her mark as a right-back defender, adding to her six-rotation repertoire.

Let's go corner-to-corner in the Sunflower State. Holle carries the banner for northeastern Kansas and has enjoyed an expanded role in Marysville's starting rotation. She tallied 6.6 assists per set in the Bulldogs' first six matches and earned some extended reps in the front row. Holle has a knack for setting against the flow and making the most of her middle blocker in two-hitter rotations. Meanwhile, her strong hands have led to increased transition work for her pin attackers. Blockers will have a lot to think about when sparring with Marysville's multi-dimensional offense.

Hartman can find a few different ways to pack the stat sheet. She was a phenomenal second-contact leader in her sophomore year with Conway Springs, finishing with nearly 800 total assists while playing around the dial. Beyond these distribution numbers, Hartman was one of the Cardinals' most effective blockers against the hard-hitting outsides in Class 2A. Conway Springs has jumped out to a 5-2 start with Hartman returning to form as the leader of the operation. Don't forget to look out for this setter's lethal serve, too.

2026 could change the narrative for Baumler. She was a do-everything utility player in her first two years at Maranatha Christian, compiling almost 150 kills in the front row last year and sealing the edge of the Eagle block. However, Baumler's termination is now secondary to her outstanding setter skills, which have yielded 9.5 assists per set in MCA's first three matches. This trio of triumphs has turned Baumler into a multi-position prospect with ample physicality needed to lock down a 5-1 system. Her best is yet to come.

We will keep channeling Kansas' rural scene for new additions to our 2028 database. Briand has made her case in just a few matches this year, guiding Western Plains to straight-set wins over Weskan and Moscow. She even dished out a season-best 10.5 assists per set in a narrow opening-day loss to Golden Plains. Through this entire stretch, Briand has demonstrated her veteran savvy by consistently finding the hot hand in the Bobcat frontcourt. Expect her to appear in our next 2028 overhaul.

Here's another example of an experienced junior who has taken the next step as an upperclassman. Fortin has helped command the Decatur Community offense since her early freshman days, but 2026's averages are on a major upswing. She has nearly doubled her output from last year after Decatur's first ten sets, earning a 4-0 start to kick off September. We've enjoyed watching Fortin evolve as a wing blocker, and she has generated some clutch touches to help her offense in transition. The Class 1A D1 hierarchy gets even more crowded with Decatur Community piling up a quick string of victories.
