The 2028 defensive group continues to take shape, and several familiar names are making their move up the rankings. These players were already on the radar, but their growth and production this season have pushed them higher. From reading attackers and covering more court to becoming more consistent in serve, receive, and first contact, each has added something to her game. As the season progresses, these defenders are demonstrating why they warrant more attention.

[player_tooltip player_id='728442' first='Shea' last='Olson'] is taking command of the back court and playing with the presence you want from a high-level defender. She reads early, closes seams with purpose, and communicates before the play develops. What stands out is her willingness to take responsibility for first contact while still maintaining discipline around the defenders next to her. Olson isn't just getting touches; she is working to turn difficult attacks into balls her setter can use and giving her team opportunities to stay in system.~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

The range [player_tooltip player_id='746416' first='McKinley' last='Honeyman'] is showing defensively has caught my attention. She works beyond her starting position, pursues touches off the block, and isn't giving up on balls that force her well outside the court. Honeyman has also become more controlled once she gets there, working to get her platform behind the ball rather than simply throwing an arm at it. That combination of effort and control is making her much more effective. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

First contact is where [player_tooltip player_id='883394' first='Anna' last='Bjorneby'] continues to separate herself. She looks balanced in serve and receive, stays quiet with her platform, and doesn't try to overplay the ball. That same discipline carries into defense, where she gets set before the swing and absorbs pace better. Bjorneby may not always make the loudest play, but she consistently provides a high number of clean, playable contacts. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

There is some grit to the way [player_tooltip player_id='898886' first='Lyla' last='Volesky'] defends. She chases a ball into the bench, gets on the floor for a short tip, and comes right back ready for the next swing. What I like is that she matches her effort with better discipline. Volesky is adjusting her depth, recognizing when to release forward and competing hard for anything that enters her space. She has become difficult to score around. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Watch [player_tooltip player_id='879238' first='Myah' last='Marie James'] before the attacker ever contacts the ball. She is starting to gather more information from the set and the hitter, which helps her anticipate where the attack is headed. That anticipation gives James a chance to stay behind more balls instead of reacting late. She also recovers quickly after making the first dig and gets herself available again, which matters when a rally turns into multiple defensive sequences. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='759296' first='Kathryn' last='Kroeplin'] is showing more control against pace. Her feet are getting her to the ball; she is working to stop at contact, and her platform stays steady through hard-driven attacks. I also like the communication that is becoming part of her game. Kroeplin is calling what she sees and helping organize the defenders around her. The physical improvement is noticeable, but the confidence she is playing with might be just as important. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas
