Motor City Power Series Standouts (Sept. 26) Part 1

Here's some of the standout players I saw from each of the teams in Pool A and Pool B.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Pool A</strong></h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Ann Arbor Skyline</strong></h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Eagles went 4-0 in their pool and had a lot of impressive moments. This team has a lot of size and athleticism to work with, and plenty of strong arms at the net like <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='828549' first='Audrey' last='Walters'], Molly Tuttle, </strong>and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='827112' first='Livia' last='Pierce']</strong>. Pierce was particularly impressive as she played with a lot of fire and wanted the ball coming her way during big points. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='765790' first='Piper' last='Ayotte']</strong> did a nice job spreading the ball around while <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='791423' first='Allison' last='Lee']</strong> was one of the top defenders at the event and helped keep the Skyline offense rolling.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Oxford</strong></h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Wildcats went 3-1 on the day with a loss to Skyline, but it was a really close matchup. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='442971' first='Brenna' last='Mirovsky']</strong> continues to be a great on-court leader for Oxford, both with her play and her energy. She can make an impact in all areas of the game. <strong>Sienna Austin</strong> was an imposing force at the net. She's got good length and stayed active to disrupt shots and win 50-50 balls. <strong>Macey Kimball</strong>, a sophomore, was putting in the work defensively as well to keep the Wildcats in some long rallies.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Lakeland</strong></h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Eagles went 2-2, but both losses came in three sets, so they really showed they have the potential to be a special team. Lakeland has a lot of size and athleticism to work with. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='460587' first='Bridget' last='Boughton']</strong>, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='939675' first='Audrey' last='Tobin']</strong>, and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1037723' first='Lilyana' last='Eller']</strong> are all capable of putting the ball away in bunches, while <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1021930' first='Sylvia' last='Brooke']</strong> is an athletic setter that gives them a chance to make big swings.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Imlay City</strong></h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Spartans went 1-3 on the day, having some ups and downs, but you can also see the potential with this team. They have a lot of athletes and a lot of players that show hustle, they just need to limit errors to turn the corner. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='887162' first='Lyla' last='Russell']</strong> is a standout libero that plays with good focus and communication, while <strong>Mia-Ann Grapentin</strong> was consistently making plays in the middle, both on offense and defense. Freshman <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='979308' first='Mia' last='Zepeda']</strong> also was a player that just always seemed in the mix for making a good play. This outside has a nose for the ball and leaves it all on the floor.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Seaholm</strong></h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Maples took their lumps, going 0-4 on the day, but they were also within three points in sets with Skyline, Imlay City, and Oxford. Seaholm has some capable hitters in outside <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='834712' first='Leighton' last='Kovac']</strong> and middle <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='826375' first='Hazel' last='Guffey']</strong>. Guffey is long and imposing at the net, while Kovac is a solid all-around athlete that can come through with some great defensive plays and big power swings.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Pool B</strong></h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Dakota</strong></h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Cougars went 4-0 in this pool, dropping just one set on the day, but seven of their nine sets saw them win by at least eight points. When this team gets rolling, it is tough to stop. A big reason for that is the play of top freshman <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='949918' first='Mikayla' last='Sinadinoski']</strong> at libero. She keeps the ball off the floor and plays with outstanding focus for a freshman. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='895702' first='Iceiss' last='Morrison']</strong> is a powerful outside that can put the ball away in impressive fashion, while <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='726961' first='Anna' last='Torey'] </strong>is a technically sound outside that can come through with some big defensive plays as well. Dakota could be a team to watch over the next month.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Dexter</strong></h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Dreadnaughts went 3-1 on the day, dropping a three-set match with Dakota, but handling its business otherwise. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='579822' first='Addison' last='Dresch'] </strong>was one of the top setters I saw on Saturday. She's just a great athlete that hustles all over the floor to make plays for her team. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='523833' first='Tessa' last='Boomhour']</strong> is a big presence at the net with her length and ability to play above the net. <strong>Neveah Streich</strong> shows really good instincts as an outside as well, while freshman <strong>Nora Arbaugh</strong> is a young prospect that impressed me with her explosiveness.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Bay City Western</strong></h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Warriors went 2-2 on the day, picking up wins over Troy and Goodrich. The win over Troy came down to two points in the first two sets and three in the third, so it was a good match for them to find a way to win. <strong>Claire Robinson</strong> is a strong athlete that has a big vertical and can whip up a challenging attack from anywhere on the floor. I was also impressed with sophomore middle <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='964918' first='Jaleeah' last='Anthony']</strong>. She was disruptive with her blocking and had a lot of pop on her swings. Setter <strong>Addyson Smith</strong> did a nice job getting both good balls to hit and communicated well with her team.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Troy</strong></h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Colts came through with a win over Goodrich, but had some struggles stringing together points against other opponents. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='586776' first='Lyla' last='Gorny'] </strong>is a bright spot for Troy, as the 6-foot middle has really good court vision and finds ways to finish points with power or offspeed attacks. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='514753' first='Kyleigh' last='Peacock']</strong> is another explosive hitter for Troy that shows promise.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Goodrich</strong></h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Martians had a tough day, but played stronger in second sets than in first, so they show improvement as the match goes on, just need better starts. Sophomore middle <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1011615' first='Katerina' last='Federick']</strong> is going to be a big-time player for Goodrich. She's got great footwork and agility. Teams are already keying in on her, but she can still power through blocks. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='842505' first='Emma' last='Larner']</strong> is a good senior leader on the floor as an outside that battles hard.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
