Running the Show: 6 Georgia Setters Recruiters Should Know

The setter position can be difficult to evaluate from a stat sheet alone. Assist totals matter, but so do tempo, decision-making, defensive effort and the ability to keep an offense organized when a match starts tightening.   Last Thursday supplied plenty of those moments across Georgia. From a 20-18 deciding set to two separate five-set reverse sweeps, several setters were asked to manage their teams when there was little room for error.   Here are six setters — one from each of the close matches we highlighted from last week — whose performances deserve another look.    vs. Ringgold: 30 assists, 14 digs, 2 aces   Coahulla Creek and Ringgold pushed their deciding set all the way to 20-18, giving [player_tooltip player_id='1039687' first='Maddy' last='Hambright'] about as good of a pressure test as a setter can get in a three-set match.   Hambright responded with 30 assists while adding 14 digs and two aces. MaxPreps classified it as her best performance of the season to that point. She has also been Coahulla Creek's primary assist producer this season after leading the Colts in that category last year.   For recruiters, the 14 digs may be just as interesting as the assist total. Hambright wasn't simply distributing the ball. She remained involved defensively while managing an offense through a deciding set that refused to end. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     vs. Hart County: 13 assists   McKenna Willard presents a different type of setter profile.   The 5-foot-11 senior helped Dunwoody survive Hart County 25-14, 15-25, 15-13, finishing with 13 assists as the Wildcats extended their winning streak. Willard is listed as both a setter and outside hitter, and Dunwoody's season statistics show how much she contributes beyond setting: she has been among the Wildcats' leaders in kills, blocks, assists and serving.   That versatility is what makes her intriguing. Recruiters looking for a setter with size, front-row value and the ability to affect several phases should have Willard on the evaluation list. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     vs. Pace Academy: 26 assists, 12 digs   Harsha had one of the cleanest setter performances from last week's close matches.   After Alpharetta dropped the opening set to Pace Academy 25-18, the Raiders responded with a 25-16 second-set win before taking the deciding set 15-12. Velugoti orchestrated the comeback with 26 assists and 12 digs.   The 5-foot-6 junior's defensive production adds another layer to the evaluation. Setters who can turn first contact or transition defense into an opportunity to run offense again provide additional value, and Velugoti produced on both sides of that equation. She is a 2028 setter worth continuing to track as Alpharetta moves deeper into the GHSA schedule. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     vs. Johns Creek: 19 assists, 12 digs   There might not be a more immediately interesting recruiting storyline on this list than [player_tooltip player_id='1039689' first='Claire' last='Yuan'].   The freshman helped Norcross erase a first-set loss against Johns Creek and take the next two sets 25-22 and 15-11. Yuan finished with 19 assists and 12 digs in the victory.   The production becomes more notable when age is considered. Running an offense in a tight varsity match is already demanding. Doing it as a freshman while helping complete a comeback against a quality opponent is something evaluators should notice.   Yuan has already produced several strong assist totals this season, and this performance showed that she can contribute defensively as well. For college programs beginning their long-range 2030 evaluations, she is an early name to put on the board. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     vs. South Forsyth: 26 assists, 12 digs, 2 aces   West Forsyth ultimately came out on the wrong side of a five-set match, but [player_tooltip player_id='1039691' first='Olivia' last='Heck']'s performance deserves attention.   The Wolverines won the first two sets before South Forsyth completed the reverse sweep, 19-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-11. Heck produced 26 assists, 12 digs and two aces during the five-set battle — her biggest performance of the season according to MaxPreps.   Recruiting evaluation shouldn't stop with the winning team. Five-set matches provide extended opportunities to see how players handle momentum swings, fatigue and adjustments, and Heck remained productive through all of it.   The double-digit dig total alongside 26 assists is especially useful for evaluating her ability to stay involved after the first contact breaks down. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Maddi may have delivered the most complete stat line of any setter in this group.   Coosa fell behind Rockmart 2-0 before winning three consecutive sets to complete a reverse sweep. Simms finished with 18 assists, nine aces, seven digs and five kills. For a sophomore setter, that is an intriguing collection of tools.   She wasn't limited to distributing. Simms created points from the service line, defended, attacked when opportunities appeared and continued running the offense while Coosa worked its way out of a two-set deficit.   She is listed among Georgia's 2026 assist leaders for sophomores and also ranks among the state's leaders in serving aces, reinforcing that the Rockmart performance wasn't simply an isolated serving night.
