Connections are strong. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>That thought was the impetus behind creating these scouting-report, photo pieces a few seasons ago to act as yearbook pages. I've written as many of them as I could based on watching teams play in person. Hopefully, they capture that squad in words and pictures, and can be accessed years down the road.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Today, we look at Dubuque Hempstead, who I watched play at Iowa City High on Tuesday. Despite dropping their first match of the season, the Mustangs flashed the upside that had them unbeaten coming into the contest. That's easier said than done, however. The senior six-rotation standout flashes a well-rounded skill set. She can attack with authority from both pins with an impressive vertical leap and a heavy, left-handed swing. Feldhacker also handles herself well in the back row thanks to quickness, reflexes and athleticism. She's solid in serve-receive and moves well as a defender in the back. Feldhacker can defend at the net, too. The long-armed middle hitter distinguishes herself as a defender that makes life difficult on opposing attacks. She was doing that again when I watched her lining up for Hempstead at Iowa City High early in the 2026 season. Freihoefer flows well with the action, getting herself in position to throw up an effective block and also provide an option for the setter on the attack. The senior did well handling the responsibilities of her main position, getting the ball to the attackers where they could terminate points. She moves fluidly around the court and can deliver the ball accurately from anywhere on it. Eichhorn sees the floor well and will exploit holes in the defense. She defends in the back row and at the net. The senior did well in helping start the Mustang transition game off of serve-receive. She reads the ball well coming in and displays a solid platform to get the ball to the setter in advantageous spots. Kass moves well laterally and in a straight line, aiding her in defending against the attack.
