Last week we had the chance to attend a top level 6A-5A match up between Centennial and Williams Field and it was quite the battle. Both these teams should have a strong season in front of them and wouldn't be surprised to see either of these teams do well when the postseason comes around!

Game Recap

Set 1: Set one was a little back and forth early with both teams having good moments, and both teams having some errors. Centennial ended up going up 8-5 after a good serving run by [player_tooltip player_id='888740' first='Isabella' last='Palladino'] that included 2 aces which lead to a Williams Field timeout. Out of that timeout Williams Field came firing back on a 9-2 run with [player_tooltip player_id='730983' first='Peyton' last='Pearson'] leading that charge with 3 kills in that run. This lead to a Centennial timeout after which it was just more of Williams Field and after a ace by Pearson.. Centennial took their last TO down 14-21 in the set. Both teams traded some points at the end of the set but Williams Field finished the set by winning 25-21. Pearson lead all players with 7 kills in set 1 along with 2 aces as the star of set one.

Set 2: This was the set of the match! It finished as 26-24 win for Williams Field but we had a lot of fun to get there! Centennial came out firing on all cylinders after that first set loss to take a 4-1 lead. But the lead was chopped down to 8-9 heading into the midway point of the set. After that... neither team held more then a 2 point lead as we got to 20-19 and that is when Centennial got their 3rd block of the set but this one was a loud one done by [player_tooltip player_id='947376' first='Gabrielle' last='Kresl'] and it sent the team into a frenzy that should have won them the set. They were up 24-20 and Williams Field fought off 4 set points to bring the match all square to 24-24. After a timeout to try and settle the team, Centennial could never re find their footing and Williams Field would not let up and took the set 26-24. throughout the set Williams Field was lead by a very balance offensive approach. They had 3 girls get over 3 kills in set 2 with Mikaela Lett, [player_tooltip player_id='891933' first='Madi' last='Smith'], and [player_tooltip player_id='730983' first='Peyton' last='Pearson'] all contributing over 3 kills each that set. Kresl lead all players with 4 kills that set for Centennial as well.

Set 3: This set saw a similar story to set 2 as both team traded runs early and kept the game tight until we got into the 20's, as Centennial once again had the lead at 21-17 after a Palladino dump to give them a 4 point lead with a ton of momentum. However, the team that never quits got the one side out they needed and then [player_tooltip player_id='891933' first='Madi' last='Smith'] went back to the service line and Centennial never got the ball back. She lead her team on a 8-0 run to end the match and just attack the serve receive of Centennial. To the credit of Williams Field though, [player_tooltip player_id='888932' first='Makenna' last='Mooney'] was doing a good job during this run of distributing the ball to the hitters with the best match ups. Especially as the game got tighter she did a great job feeding Pearson at the end to make sure the game ended in this set.

Standouts from the match:

Brylee had a great game against Centennial. She was all over the place with her defense, did a great job serving, and did an excellent job with her out of system setting. During the match we had her officially with 13 digs, 1 aces, and 5 assists. She also passed well over a 2.0 with her serve receive as well. Easily the best defender and passer in the gym on this night.

Gabrielle was an offensive force in this match and threw in some good blocks/block touches as well. She did a great job patrolling the middle of the net and was always available to take swings when they were in system. Unofficially we had her with 11 kills, which lead the Coyotes on offense for the night. She also had 3 blocks as well and was a force at the net for the Williams Field middles to try and get through.

Bella was a great setter for the Coyotes on the night and was one of the top hitters as well. She did a great job running the offense and being a part of the offense as well. She finished the night unofficially with 11 assists, 6 kills, 2 aces, and 6 digs. She was all over the stat sheet and was able to steady the ship at times for her team. She has a lot of tools to help her team be successful and is someone who was a clear standout in this match.

Williams Field runs a 5-1 but with someone like Makenna running the show it is obvious as to why! She did a great job leading all teams in assists with 23 on the night on top of throwing in 4 aces, and 2 kills as well. She was also a great defender and got a lot of great touches on first balls to help her team stay alive. She was second on the team with 10 digs on the night and really has a great all around game to her play.

Peyton was probably the star of the night if we are being honest. She passes well in serve receive, was in the stat book in almost every category, and was the go to person that shut down every set! She led all players on the night with 15 kills, and was tied with the lead with 5 aces. She also had 7 digs and a number of great touches in out of system plays. She was a 6 rotational player and really showed why and how to carry the load for her team.

The school season is just getting started, and we can't wait to continue following Arizona athletes and programs throughout the fall!
