2030 Outsides Making Plays Headed to Postseason

These five freshmen have found their way onto the court this fall, and most will soon face district playoff battles with their teams. These 2030 prospects have a chance to play their best in the most pressure-packed matches of their first varsity season. We profile these five outsides (with a little RS and MB thrown in) in late October with the November playoffs looming.    Verma has excellent length and a quick, whippy arm swing that can generate heat and kills. She isn't afraid to rip it hard, angle it, or attack the block, and her potential as an attacker is clear. Verma will have a chance to develop the rest of her game and her overall physicality as she rolls into her 15's club season. Her willingness to go for it as an attacker will serve her well as her strength increases and her overall skill set continues to grow.     Brandsma has taken on the OH position for Eastside Catholic and played all the way around, which is never easy for a first-year varsity player. The 2030 prospect is confident in the back row and at the net; she can go up, hammer down an overpass, and has a solid platform and the mental toughness to handle 20+ serve receptions in a tight match. Brandsma has an easy flow to her game and looks comfortable taking a swing or serving when a set is in the balance.     Gilfillan is willing to take a big rip against a well-formed block, and she has the skill needed to tip or roll a shot when she has to make a play. The 2030 prospect knows how to find the deep corners and seams in the defense, and her quick compact swing generates power and kills. Her offensive game isn't locked into one swing path or attack route; she can score swinging line, off block, or by mixing in smart shots.     The 6'1" Phelps has been putting up big-time kill numbers for Chelan- she posted a 30-kill match versus Meridian in a five-set thriller. Phelps has a terrific high contact point on her swing, and like many athletes in the Chelan program, she can make all the small ball-bettering plays to keep her team ahead on the scoreboard. Time spent in the sand shows in Phelps overall skills; she has continued to improve as the season has progressed, and we expect her to excel in the post-season.     Hanes is a legacy player for the Spudders; sister Paige is a senior captain on the squad, and the team overall is positioned perfectly to make a deep run in the postseason. Hanes has a strong physical presence on the court, and she can rack up kills as a middle or on the pins; she is solid defensively and a strong server. The 5'10" freshman looks very comfortable executing all the skills you would expect from a more experienced high school player; her time growing up around the game shines through when she is on the floor.
