5A Heat Check: Defensive Difference-Makers

The 5A defensive scene is bringing plenty of heat! These five defenders have been making their presence known with strong reads, quick movement, and plenty of hustle in the back row. From taking away large portions of the court to controlling the first contact, each player brings a different defensive strength. As the season continues, these are five names worth keeping on the radar!

Isabella McClinton, L/DS, Cherokee Trail

McClinton has been a steady presence in the Cherokee Trail back row. The senior has collected 223 digs this season, averaging 4.8 digs per set. She stays ready and brings strong fundamentals to every play. Additionally, McClinton moves smoothly into position and works hard to secure her angle. That movement translates well into both defense and serve receive. She also takes on a large portion of the court, giving her hitters more freedom to transition. Her consistency makes her a valuable piece of the defense!

Constance Scherff, L/DS, Fountain-Fort Carson

Scherff is making plenty of noise in the back row! The junior has recorded 220 digs this season, averaging 5.4 digs per set. However, her impact goes beyond the numbers. Scherff has a strong feel for reading hitters. Because of that, she can take away options and force attackers to find new ways to score. She also does a nice job digging high through the middle. That gives her setter time to get underneath the ball and run the offense. On top of her defense, Scherff brings serious heat from the service line with 23 aces this season!

Norah Gruwell, L/DS, Grand Junction

Gruwell brings a fearless mentality to the back row. The senior has posted 216 digs this season, averaging 4.6 digs per set. More importantly, she commits to the play and does not hesitate when the ball comes her way. Her reading ability is another strong part of her game. Gruwell's beach volleyball experience translates well to the indoor court, especially with her speed and quickness. She covers ground quickly and brings a strong presence to the back row. When a play needs to be made, Gruwell is ready to go after it!

Olivia Harris, L/DS, Erie

Harris brings plenty of energy to the Erie back row! The senior has recorded 205 digs this season, averaging 4.4 digs per set. She plays with an eagerness to keep the ball alive and stays ready for whatever comes her way. Not every dig has to be perfect, and Harris understands that. If she can get the ball up, she is giving her team another chance. Meanwhile, she keeps a steady pace in the back row and stays prepared for different shots. Her quickness and competitive energy make her a fun defender to watch!

[player_tooltip player_id='792611' first='Brooke' last='Wildhagen'], L/DS, Chaparral

Wildhagen brings athleticism and control to the Chaparral defense. The junior has collected 196 digs this season, averaging 3.9 digs per set. She stays active and keeps her feet moving throughout the rally. That footwork is a big part of her game. Wildhagen moves forward and backward with ease instead of getting caught flat-footed. Additionally, she reads the play well and puts herself in position to make the next contact. With her quickness and consistency, she is a strong name to know in the 5A back row!

Bringing the Heat in 5A

These five defenders are showing just how much impact the back row can have!
