Jumping on the Radar: Sophomore Hitters to Know

These young attackers are stepping up in a big way, showcasing impressive power, versatility, court awareness, and the ability to terminate against experienced competition. Whether they're dominating at the net, finding ways to score from the pins, or becoming go-to offensive weapons for their teams, these sophomores are turning heads and putting together impressive seasons. She is one of those players I find myself wishing would get the ball more often because of what she can do when given the opportunity. Athletic, dynamic, and explosive in her attack, Fier has shown she can be a legitimate offensive weapon. She is versatile enough to attack from multiple spots on the court, making her more than just a traditional middle and giving her the ability to create scoring opportunities from different positions. With an impressive .338 hitting percentage, she has proven she knows how to put the ball away efficiently. Averaging nearly 2 kills per set, Hjort brings much more to the court than just a strong attack. She has excellent spacing, moves well in tandem with her setter, and consistently finds ways to score from multiple attacking positions. What stands out about Hjort is that she isn't a one-dimensional middle like many young players at the position. She understands how to move within the offense, makes herself available, and can be effective attacking from either side of the court. She gets off the floor quickly and attacks with confidence, making her a tough matchup for opposing defenses. She is also a presence at the net defensively, using her vertical and timing to challenge opposing hitters and force them to adjust their shots. Averaging 2.1 kills per set this season, along with 16 blocks and 123 digs, Brady-Baso is showing her ability to contribute on both sides of the ball. She is quick off the floor, sees the court well, and does an excellent job transitioning off the net to make herself available in the offense. Her ability to move efficiently and get into position allows her to be an effective attacking option for Red Lake County Central. She sees the court, reads the net, and has shown the ability to recognize the block and find openings in the defense. She can put down a powerful swing and isn't afraid to stay aggressive, even when attacking out of system. I like that she continues to stay aggressive and looks for opportunities to score rather than simply sending the ball over. As she continues to develop, more of those attacks will start finding the floor.
