Nebraska 2029 Liberos Covering More Ground This Fall

Nebraska's Class of 2029 doesn't need a contrasting jersey to stand out, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

Backcourt stars remain a staple of prep volleyball in the Cornhusker State. That description holds regardless of class, region, or age group. Even some eager underclassmen have managed to swipe the fall spotlight, and we're equally excited to discuss them here.

Our recent tournament stops on the high school circuit have brought several 2029s to our attention, and liberos have been particularly influential in this sophomore class. Nebraska's youth movement starts in the back row.

These athletes are ready to lead the wave.

Why not start with a wildcard pick? O'Bannon has proven she can positively influence a defense no matter which position she plays. Her early days at Crete brought her termination into focus, as O'Bannon played around the dial as an outside hitter. However, her defensive duties have taken precedence in Year 2. O'Bannon has compiled a whopping 6.6 digs per set while donning the libero jersey, elevating Crete's balance and ball control. VCNebraska athletes are known for these multi-role transitions.

Svehla is fitting right in with her new crew. She has joined Papillion-La Vista's stacked lineup, building upon a decorated club season in the River City Jrs gym. The rigors of Class A competition have not deterred Svehla from putting up another massive dig total and commanding the Monarchs' passing pattern. We've also watched Svehla take the initiative as a secondary setter to aid her hitters in out-of-system situations.

We might have seen this one coming. Wiese had several tremendous showings with Premier Nebraska 15 Silver, including a runner-up effort at the Show Me Qualifier. That squad churned through tournaments with tenacious backcourt effort, and Wiese was always there to set the tone. Bishop Neumann has seen similar returns en route to a 23-0 start, so we expect to see more high-pressure volleyball in Wiese's future.

Add another Premier Nebraska star to the mix. Mertens was the defensive anchor for this year's Premier Nebraska 15 Gold, and she has returned to full strength in time for fall ball. Her 4.9 digs per set is among the best marks in Class B, a field known for its exceptional floor defenders. Of course, Lincoln Pius X has received a lot more than standout defense from its second-year libero. Mertens has a knack for passing dimes and has allowed the Thunderbolts to climb the wildcard ladder this fall.

We're about to go on a run of small-town stars for this one, so get ready. Zwingman leads us off after averaging nearly five digs per set during Elgin Public/Pope John's 11-9 start. The Wolfpack have grown accustomed to this sophomore's defensive excellence after Zwingman made an immediate impact with last year's group. She makes the kind of quick, decisive reads you wouldn't expect from a second-year prep athlete, and the big numbers are rolling in.

Leyton has been looking for new leaders to emerge after claiming a No. 1 tournament seed and a runner-up finish in 2024. Roelle is an ideal candidate to fill this niche, as she has logged nearly 200 digs through the season's midway point. This sophomore is particularly effective in the middle-back area, where she can dig crosscourt heat or cover tips down the line. She has even shouldered occasional attacking roles to further her influence in the Warrior lineup.

Riverside is next on the docket. The Chargers have commanded some recent attention on our site after surging to a 19-2 record in the Class D1 race. Terrific defenders have catalyzed this historic run, and Seamann stands in the middle of it all. She has amassed around three digs per set this year, backing up her consistent output as a freshman. Year 2 has brought out the best in this multi-sport standout, and we're hoping to see Cedar Rapids and Spalding represented in the tournament.

Why not bring up one more program playing some of its best volleyball? North Central has gone step for step with Riverside, giving Class D1 another postseason contender with a 19-2 start. Hoffman has somehow eclipsed her amazing defensive pace from a year ago, upping her average from 5.5 to six digs per set. That production has come through deliberate first steps and off-speed coverage that almost looks effortless. Hoffman embodies the value of a talented libero, and it's showing up in the win column.
