Kindred is making things exciting in Region 1, and I don't think they're getting enough attention for what they've been doing lately. The Vikings have picked up late-season wins over Oak Grove, Northern Cass, and Valley City. That's a solid stretch of volleyball against quality competition, especially with the postseason approaching.

What catches my attention isn't just who they've beaten, but when they're doing it. Kindred is playing some of its best volleyball as every team tries to find its rhythm. They've shown they can compete with programs that have been part of the Region 1 conversation all season, and those results make me want to take a closer look at the players behind this run.

More than one way to run the offense

One thing I find interesting about Kindred is the setting combination of [player_tooltip player_id='727982' first='Collins' last='McQuillan'] and [player_tooltip player_id='883401' first='Ivy' last='Trenbeath']. They give the Vikings flexibility, and I like having two players who can take on those responsibilities when the match gets difficult.

McQuillan brings a steady presence to the offense and gives her hitters opportunities even when the first pass isn't perfect. Trenbeath offers something different with her ability to set and attack from the right side. Between the two, Kindred has options in how they distribute the ball and who they can involve offensively.

It's a setup worth watching against teams like Northern Cass and Oak Grove, especially now that the Vikings have already beaten both programs.

Sanders and Jordheim are making their presence felt.

[player_tooltip player_id='727985' first='Taylor' last='Sanders'] and [player_tooltip player_id='724982' first='Jenner' last='Jordheim'] give Kindred two different looks at the net, and both are important to what this team can do.

At 5-foot-11, Sanders brings size and attacking ability from the pins. She's someone who can challenge a block with a hard swing but also has opportunities to use the court when the defense takes away her first option. Her ability to contribute from either side gives the Vikings another way to find favorable matchups.

I want to spend a little more time on Jordheim because there's more to her game than attacking. At 5-foot-9, she brings athleticism to the front row, and her blocking is another part of what makes her valuable. She can help challenge opposing hitters at the net while still giving Kindred an attacking option when the ball comes back their way.

I think that's an important part of this team's balance. When players contribute on both sides of the ball, you aren't relying on just one part of their game to make an impact. Jordheim gives Kindred another player at the net, whether she's looking to put a ball away or help stop one.

Kittelson adds another presence in the middle.

Senior Lyla Kittelson deserves attention, especially for the work she does at the net. She gives Kindred a middle who can challenge opposing attacks and provide another offensive option.

With Sanders and Jordheim involved on the pins, Kittelson's role becomes even more important. Opposing teams can't spend every rally focused on the outside hitters if the Vikings are finding opportunities through the middle. I like that Kindred has several players who can contribute instead of asking one hitter to carry the offense through an entire match.

When the Vikings face some of the stronger attacking teams in Region 1, having Kittelson and Jordheim contribute to the blocking effort gives them another way to compete.

The players keeping rallies alive

Not every important play ends with a kill, and that's where Kaitlyn Brink and Mallory Keller come into the conversation.

Both contribute in the back row, handling serve receive and defensive responsibilities that help Kindred stay competitive during longer rallies. Against good teams, there are going to be stretches when the Vikings are under pressure. They need players who can handle those moments and give McQuillan and Trenbeath another opportunity to get the offense going.

Brink and Keller are part of that effort. Their contributions might not always stand out in the same way as a big swing or block, but they're important to the way this group plays.

A team nobody should overlook

I keep coming back to those wins over Oak Grove, Northern Cass, and Valley City. They're the reason Kindred deserves a closer look heading into the postseason. The Vikings aren't simply hoping they can compete with strong teams. They've already gone out and beaten some.

A good mix of players is contributing, and I like that their strengths don't all come from one position. McQuillan and Trenbeath help run the offense, Sanders and Jordheim give them attacking options, Kittelson adds another presence in the middle, and Brink and Keller handle important work in the back row.

Region 1 won't be an easy road for anyone. But Kindred is entering tournament play with some impressive wins under their belt, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Vikings make things uncomfortable for a few teams along the way.

They've earned a place in the postseason conversation. Now we'll see what they do with it. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas
