About Maiya
How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?
My gameplay style as a middle relies on my athleticism and my ability to keep learning. I use my vertical to get above the net and block, and I try to get to my spot quickly and be ready to hit. Since this is my first club season, I'm still refining aspects of playing middle like footwork, timing, reading the setter and the block but I make up for it with effort and a competitive mindset.
Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?
On the court, I hustle to every play and want to win every rep, not just every game. Off the court, I'm someone who takes feedback to heart and works to add it into practice. I don't get discouraged by mistakes; I see them as part of learning and part of what happens when you're pushing to get better. I'm a hard worker and get excited by the results, but I love the work it takes to get there.
Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?
I'm not currently part of a formal club or organization, but I have a strong interest in art and ceramics outside of volleyball. It's helped me develop patience and attention to detail, and it gives me a creative outlet off the court.
What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?
This season I've worked on staying positive after a play. My body language and facial expressions have improved, which has helped me encourage my teammates during tough points. This has taught me patience and how to lead by example, even as a newer player. I'm still growing as a leader, but I'm learning that consistency and attitude matter just as much as physical skill.
Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.
Before the season started, I sprained my ankle during HS volleyball postseason and needed PT to get back to playing shape. Sitting out the first few practices made me feel behind, not just physically, but in bonding with teammates. Staying committed to rehab helped me catch up and taught me patience, how to push through setbacks, and stay active even when I couldn't play.
What type of college are you looking for?
I'm open to any size or location of school, as long as it's the right volleyball fit. D1 is the dream, but since I just started club volleyball, I know that's a stretch right now. I'm open to whatever level ends up being the right fit for me. Academic support for athletes is also important, since I want a school where I can succeed both on the court and in the classroom.
