Here are three 5th Region volleyball teams on the rise.
Bardstown: Amassing the fifth-best record in the 5th Region, Bardstown concluded the 2019 high school volleyball season 23-11. Bardstown, a member of the 19th District, enjoyed a turnaround season after finishing 2018 with a 9-25 record. Senior Sophia Downs (311 digs, 39 service aces) and junior Kyndal Ganoe (222 kills, 219 digs, 47 service aces) are both headed back for the Bardstown volleyball team, which put together an 11-match winning streak in 2019. The Eagles started strong in 2019, winning 18 of the season’s first 22 matches.
Bethlehem: Finishing near the .500 mark, Bethlehem ended the 2019 high school volleyball season 15-16. The Eagles were much-improved after exiting 2018 with a 6-20 overall record. Bethlehem, which competes with Bardstown in the 19th District, returns several experienced players. Bethlehem was among the most improved teams in the 5th Region during the 2019 high school volleyball season. Looking ahead to the 2020 high school volleyball season, juniors Gabrielle Disselkamp and Sara Spalding, along with sophomore Torie Sparks, return for much-improved Bethlehem.
Campbellsville: Continuing to show improvement in the 2019 high school volleyball season, Campbellsville, a team under the direction of head coach Anthony Epps, a former University of Kentucky men’s basketball player, compiled an 18-12 overall record. The Eagles were 15-11 in the 2018 prep volleyball season. Several experienced players are headed back to the court for Campbellsville, a member of the 20th District. Campbellsville lost only a couple of players to graduation off a team that won the Adair County-hosted Lady Indians Invitational in 2019. Juniors Kaylyn Smith (173 kills, 50 blocks, 148 digs), Lainey Watson (403 assists, 125 digs, 39 service aces) and Sarah Adkins (89 kills, 286 digs, 44 service aces) are poised to combine to lead Campbellsville in the high school volleyball season ahead.
