Some positions become more valuable as athletes learn how to affect the players around them.

Setters and middles live in that space.

A setter is developing not only her hands, but her ability to make decisions, communicate and give several different hitters something they can attack.

A middle is learning that her job extends beyond recording kills and blocks. Her movement can hold another blocker, create space for a pin or funnel an attack toward the defense without ever appearing in the stat line.

At the Georgia Stock Up Showcase, these five athletes showed pieces of those larger responsibilities beginning to develop.

Sophia showed a developing ability to keep the offense functional when first contact was not perfect. She worked to move underneath off-target passes, square herself when possible and still give hitters something usable. That adaptability is especially important at a showcase where setter-hitter connections are being created almost instantly. Sophia did not need everything around her to look organized before attempting to create organization herself. As her location becomes more consistent and she gains confidence changing tempo, that willingness to solve imperfect situations can become an important part of her identity as a setter. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Kenslie's size gives her an interesting physical foundation at setter, particularly because it can eventually translate to blocking and front-row attacking in addition to distribution. At Stock Up, though, the encouraging piece was seeing her work on the actual setting responsibilities rather than simply relying on her frame. She showed a relatively calm rhythm, kept her hands available early and worked to maintain a consistent contact point. Continued improvement in footwork to off-target passes will make those physical tools even more useful. The ceiling becomes especially interesting if Kenslie continues developing into a setter who can influence the game both as an offensive organizer and as a true front-row presence. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Nefertari showed an understanding that the middle position requires constant work even when the ball is not ultimately set there. She stayed active at the net, transitioned away from blocking responsibilities and continued presenting herself as an option. That repeated effort is one of the first habits young middles need to develop because simply being available can affect how the opposing block moves. As Nefertari becomes quicker with her reads and more efficient moving from block to transition, those habits should give her more opportunities to become involved offensively. The willingness to keep working is already there. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Paislee showed one of the more encouraging offensive traits for a developing middle: she could adjust to different set locations and still create a reasonable attacking opportunity. Her footage showed an ability to find more than one attacking angle rather than requiring the exact same perfect connection every time. That adaptability is important because young middles often spend their early development learning how to stay offensive when timing changes around them. Paislee already showed some ability to solve those situations. Continued work on blocking reads, lateral movement and transition speed can give that attacking versatility an even stronger platform. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Sophia brings useful length to the middle, but the most important developmental piece will be learning how to consistently put that length in the right place at the right time. At Stock Up, she showed willingness to move laterally across the net and transition back into offensive availability instead of remaining stationary after the blocking phase. Those are encouraging habits for a young middle because the position becomes increasingly demanding as offensive tempos speed up. Sophia already possesses physical tools that can affect the net. As her reads, timing and footwork become more refined, those tools should become much harder for opponents to play around. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Sophia, Kenslie, Nefertari, Paislee and Sophia are still developing, and that is what makes their progression interesting.

A young setter does not need to run a college-level offense yet.

A young middle does not need to have every blocking read mastered.

What evaluators can look for instead are the habits that suggest where those skills may be headed: pursuing imperfect passes, staying available in transition, adjusting to different teammates, communicating and continuing to work through every phase of the rally.
