Digging Deep: 6 Georgia DS/Liberos Who Showed Up Under Pressure

Back-row players rarely receive the same recruiting attention generated by a huge kill total or a dominant blocking performance, but close matches tend to expose just how valuable first contact and floor defense really are.   Last week's tightest matches gave defensive specialists and liberos little margin for error. Long rallies, extended deciding sets and comeback attempts put extra pressure on serve receive and transition defense.   From those six matches, these are six back-row players worth another look.    [player_tooltip player_id='1039708' first='Ava' last='King'] made her impact felt in two phases during Coosa's five-set comeback against Rockmart. After falling behind 2-0, Coosa reversed the match and won the final three sets. King finished with 16 digs and eight aces, providing both defensive stability and significant pressure from behind the service line.   King is a junior who has experience at libero, defensive specialist and outside hitter, although Coosa is currently utilizing her heavily in the back row. She has also been one of the Eagles' leading servers this season.   Eight aces will jump off a stat sheet, but the 16 digs in a five-set reverse sweep may tell recruiters more about her value. Coosa needed to extend rallies long enough to completely change the direction of the match, and King was a central part of that effort. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga       The South Forsyth-West Forsyth match lasted five sets and featured one of last week's biggest momentum swings. West Forsyth took the opening two sets before South Forsyth completed the reverse sweep. For recruiters looking specifically at the Wolverines' back row, [player_tooltip player_id='1039706' first='Charlie' last='Holcomb'] is the name to know.   The matchup data lists Holcomb as West Forsyth's leading defender with 125 digs in the displayed season totals while also showing 28 aces, giving her value in both serve receive/floor defense and from the service line.   That isn't a new role for Holcomb. She handled 432 receptions last season and has repeatedly produced double-digit dig performances, including 14 digs and four aces against Norcross earlier this season.   Back-row recruiting is about more than spectacular saves. The ability to repeatedly handle first-contact responsibility is what can keep an offense in system, and Holcomb has accumulated meaningful experience doing it. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='921772' first='Carolina' last='Morant'] is one of the younger defensive players in Georgia worth getting familiar with early.   Norcross rallied past Johns Creek 20-25, 25-22, 15-11. While setter [player_tooltip player_id='1039689' first='Claire' last='Yuan'] was the statistical headline from that match, Morant is the back-row player recruiters should attach to the same Norcross team. The matchup data lists Morant as the Blue Devils' leading dig producer with 128 digs in the displayed season totals.   Her recent performances reinforce the point. Morant recorded 18 digs against East Forsyth and another 18 against Grayson during the surrounding stretch, while national freshman statistics have also listed her among the country's early dig leaders. A freshman already handling that level of defensive volume is worth tracking well before the recruiting process becomes urgent. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     vs. Pace Academy: 12 digs, 3 assists   Gabi Monteiro helped steady Alpharetta after the Raiders dropped the opening set against Pace Academy.   The 5-foot-4 junior is listed as both a libero and defensive specialist and currently leads Alpharetta at 3.4 digs per set.   Monteiro also plays club volleyball with M2, giving recruiters another evaluation setting beyond the high-school season. Her profile is worth following because she isn't simply accumulating occasional defensive numbers — Alpharetta is consistently placing significant back-row responsibility on her. In a three-set match decided by three points, making one additional rally playable matters. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     vs. Hart County: 11 digs, 3 aces   [player_tooltip player_id='1039705' first='Simone' last='Stroe'] gave Dunwoody an important combination of floor defense and service pressure in its 2-1 escape against Hart County.   Stroe finished with 11 digs and three aces as Dunwoody took the deciding set 15-13.   The junior libero has also been Dunwoody's most productive defender over the larger sample. Current team data lists Stroe as the Wildcats' digs-per-set leader at 4.3, while earlier detailed statistics showed her leading the roster in both digs and receptions.   That combination matters for recruiters. Dig totals tell part of the story; taking a large share of serve-receive responsibility while maintaining defensive production gives a better picture of a libero's actual workload. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     vs. Coahulla Creek: 24 digs, 2 assists   Ringgold needed virtually every defensive play it could get to survive Coahulla Creek.   The Tigers eventually won 18-25, 25-17, 20-18, and [player_tooltip player_id='519299' first='Hannah' last='Edgeworth'] finished with 24 digs and two assists in the three-set match.   Twenty-four digs in three sets is already eye-catching. Doing it in a match that ended with a 20-18 deciding set makes the performance even more meaningful.   Edgeworth is Ringgold's junior libero and has been the Tigers' leading defender this season. Earlier season statistics listed her at 4.7 digs per set.
