Leanna Newton Leads a Young Group Carrying Big Varsity Roles

Being talented for your age is one thing.   Being trusted to do a job your team genuinely needs is different.   The underclassmen in this group aren't simply getting varsity experience while older players absorb the pressure. They're already being asked to make decisions, stay composed and solve problems against players with more experience.    Sophomore outside [player_tooltip player_id='749393' first='Leanna' last='Newton'] already plays with the expectation that the ball may find her when Oglethorpe County needs a point. At 6-foot-1, she has a physical advantage on the pin, but what makes her interesting is that she's beginning to learn how to use more than height and power.   Leanna is seeing increasingly organized blocks because opponents know where much of the offense is going. That is forcing her to develop the parts of outside hitting that usually separate young scorers from mature ones: seeing hands, changing speeds, attacking different depths of the court and knowing when the right decision is to recycle the ball instead of forcing it. She still has plenty of room to refine those choices, but she's learning them under real pressure instead of in low-stakes repetitions. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Freshman Katherin Rodgers has already shown that she wants to be more than a front-row attacker. Her defensive involvement is one of the things I appreciate most about her early varsity season.   Katherin looks comfortable staying mentally connected after she rotates behind the attack line. That matters for a young outside because passing and defending can easily become the part of the game a hitter tolerates until she gets to swing again. Katherin is getting the chance to build those habits early. As her footwork in serve receive becomes more consistent and her platform gets quieter under pressure, she has a chance to become a much more complete six-rotation player. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Freshman Gracie Roughton is still in the stage where playing several positions is an advantage rather than a sign that she needs one permanent home. Her libero, outside and opposite experience is exposing her to different reads and responsibilities every time she rotates.   What stands out is how much court awareness she is being forced to develop. In the back row, Gracie has to read attackers and manage seams. At the pin, she has to understand spacing, timing and how the block is forming. Those experiences complement one another. Right now, her versatility is helping her learn the game as a whole instead of becoming overly dependent on one skill set. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Sophomore Ashlyn Cagle plays with an energy that shows up in several parts of the match. She doesn't seem content waiting for the perfect ball or the perfect rotation to make herself useful.   Ashlyn's willingness to serve aggressively, defend and attack gives North Georgia Christian a player who can affect momentum in different ways. I like that she seems comfortable switching mental gears quickly — from serving pressure to floor defense to attacking. For a sophomore, that adaptability is important because it shows she is learning how one phase of the game flows directly into the next. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Sophomore Tessa Landress has to win with reading and positioning rather than physical reach, and that's often a good way to accelerate a defender's development.   At 5-foot-1, Tessa can't rely on getting away with late movement. She has to recognize the hitter's approach, get stopped early and make sure her platform is behind the ball. Her ability to continue pursuing swings over long matches shows good defensive persistence. The next step is becoming increasingly comfortable taking more court and communicating those decisions before the ball crosses the net. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga    None of these girls needs to look finished yet.   Leanna is learning how to score when the defense expects her. Katherin is building the back-row side of her game, Gracie is learning from several positions, Ashlyn keeps finding ways to stay involved and Tessa is developing the reading skills that make defenders look quicker than they actually have to move.   What matters most is that their development is happening inside real varsity responsibility.
