When you look at North Dakota's Class of 2029, some talented defensive players deserve a little more attention. It's easy to get caught up in the big kills and blocks, but I've always appreciated the players who do the work in the back row. They aren't afraid to go after a tough ball, handle pressure in serve receive, and find ways to keep rallies alive when it looks like the point might be over.

As these athletes continue developing, I'm interested in seeing how they grow into bigger roles for their teams. Playing libero or defensive specialist takes more than just getting digs. It's about reading the court, communicating with teammates, and being someone your team can depend on when things get difficult. In our latest North Dakota Class of 2029 rankings update, five defensive players have caught our attention for what they're bringing to the court.

Evie plays with a relentless engine. She's the kid diving into benches to save balls, but what really sold me on her is how hard she works between points. She reads hitters early, doesn't flinch against hard line shots, and gives her setter a high, clean ball even when she's pulled way out of system. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Liv makes serve-receive look easy. While many young defenders fight fast floaters or swing at contact, Liv absorbs the hit and drops it right into the setter's lap. She stays super quiet through contact and moves laterally across the back row without ever looking rushed or off-balance. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Sylvia has been a core piece for Fargo South, putting up 150 digs (3.66 per set) in a tough EDC conference. What I love about her game is her second touch. If South's primary setter digs the first ball, Sylvia steps in as backup setter and pushes a soft, accurate high ball out to the pin. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Rounding out the Top 5 is [player_tooltip player_id='905311' first='Maci' last='Wegleitner']. She's a steady passer who doesn't let a tough serve throw her off. Whether she's moving to get behind a float serve or handling a hard-driven ball, she keeps her platform under control. I like that she doesn't overcomplicate things.
