They were showing their ability to be dynamic, run an offense, adjust to the opponent’s strategies, and keep their hitters at their best.
Here are some of the setters who impressed at the Prep Dig Sunset Slam.
Kate Bahrke Kate Bahrke S Oconto | 2023 State WI – Class of 2023 – Oconto
Kate moves the ball around incredibly well. She is fast and has good hands. She is a gritty player and very competitive. With athletes like Cora Behnke Cora Behnke 6'0" | OH Oconto | 2021 State WI and Hannah Moe on her pins there is always a chance to make some big plays. Kate has a good energy on the court and uses her speed and good hands to set her team up for success… literally.
Andrea Bortulin – Class of 2022 – Luther Prep
Andrea has great hands and is solid on defense and hitting as well. She uses her hitters well and is an energizer on the court. Andrea clearly works hard and makes a huge effort to make every ball given to her a hittable ball. She is a great setter and a huge asset to this team.
Grace Kieselhorst – Class of 2021 – Luther Prep
Grace is a very special athlete. She gives 100% effort 100% of the time. She is a great setter, teammate, motivator, and overall athlete. She was impressive to watch. Grace is a clear leader on the Luther Prep team and made some incredible plays on Wednesday.
Emma Baierl Emma Baierl 5'8" | S Howards Grove | 2022 State WI – Class of 2022 – Howards Grove
The Howards Grove team is an explosive team. From their serve receive to their offense they are high energy all the time. At the center of that and leading the team is Emma Baierl Emma Baierl 5'8" | S Howards Grove | 2022 State WI . She is a precise setter who has great form, is fast, and makes great decisions on the court.
Olivia Breunig Olivia Breunig 5'8" | S Sauk Prairie | 2021 State WI – Class of 2021 – Sauk Prairie
Olivia has great hands and is super fast. Her speed makes her a very dangerous setter as she gets to everything and can push the ball pin to pin. She is experienced and a leader on this team.
Josie Halbieb – Class of 2021 – Sun Prairie – Committed to Kansas State
Josie is one of the best setters in her class. She is fast, smart, and efficient. She works well with her hitters and is a great leader on the court.
Brooke Bolwerk Brooke Bolwerk 5'6" | S Appleton North | 2021 State WI – Class of 2021 – Appleton North – Committed to Minnesota State – Mankato
Brooke is an amazing all around athlete. She has impressed me for years. Her grit and defense on the court is unparalleled and she moves the ball around incredibly well. She knows her hitters and their preferences and rarely makes mistakes. Brooke also is great at seeing the other side of the court and making smart sets based on the opposing blockers and defense.
Natalie Tesch Natalie Tesch 5'10" | S Wisconsin Lutheran | 2021 State WI – Class of 2021 – Wisconsin Lutheran
Natalie Tesch Natalie Tesch 5'10" | S Wisconsin Lutheran | 2021 State WI is another gritty athlete. She is a lefty that is effective as a hitter and a setter. Natalie is an energizer on the court who makes big plays and gets hyped for her teammates as well. She is a natural leader who is clearly respected by her teammates.
Emma Johnson Emma Johnson 5'10" | S Luxemburg-Casco | 2022 State WI – Class of 2022 – Luxemburg-Casco
Emma is an athlete who really stood out at the Sunset Slam. She made some huge plays and was a leader for her very talented team. She utilized every single one of her hitters. Additionally, I don’t think I ever saw her pass the second ball, she always took it with her hands. She is a dynamic athlete who will only continue to impress in her coming years.
These setters worked hard and led their teams to success throughout the Sunset Slam. They had energy, played efficiently, and created a competitive environment on the court.
