With Mara LeGrand (Papillion-LaVista South) and Halle Thies (Filmore Central) already on the roster and Hannah Kepler (2021, Milford) committed, the Rangers lassoed another Nebraska prep in Omaha Skutt Catholic’s Breanna Skala (Premier 17 Gold Club Volleyball).
The 5’6 senior libero Skala averaged 5.1 digs per set and 4.0 serve receptions per set in 2019 and is well on her way to repeating those stats as Skutt Catholic is off to a 7-0 start.
Bre was intent on going to Colorado for college from the get-go, “I researched a lot of colleges in Colorado because I love the mountains and skiing. I reached out to Regis before everything shut down and I got to visit them. I loved the campus and it reminds me a lot of Skutt. The atmosphere is great and I loved the opportunity to go play volleyball in Colorado. They made the final four last year in volleyball so I knew they were competitive.”
Regis University, under 4th-year head coach Joel List (14 total years at Regis, a native of Ogallala), has been a mainstay at the top of the Division 2 rankings with a semifinal appearance at the D2 NCAA Tournament and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions in 2019. Bre comments on the staff, “The coaches were very welcoming when I visited. They seem very supportive of their team and always wanting to push their players to be a better volleyball player and person.”
Undecide if she wanted to play volleyball in college, Bre only made visits to Regis and Metropolitan State University, both in Denver, and did not do any virtual tours. “I didn’t have a list because I was still debating on playing volleyball in college but I was very interested in Regis and I’m glad that I decided to play.”
“Mara Legrand helped me a lot with deciding. She helped me on my campus tour and also gave me advice about college and other things. It was good to get advice from another person who is from Omaha. I can’t wait to play with her!”
Bre’s advice on recruiting, “The way I prepared for recruitment was by emailing coaches and being prepared with questions to ask the coaches if I get to talk to them. I would recommend to others that are in the recruiting process is to put yourself out there and email as many coaches as possible so you have options.”
Bre is undecided on a major at this time, but hopes by going to Colorado something will spark her interest. Bre believes the move to Colorado will be easier with all of the Nebraska connections.
